Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) returned to corporate media Sunday to bolster his own reputation while calling out fellow Republicans as “almost treasonous.”
Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union” Romney discussed sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine with host Dana Bash. Referring to President Vladimir Putin’s government as “a pariah,” Romney insisted countries continue imposing harsher restrictions against them.
“The world is behind the people of Ukraine…The Russian government is a pariah,” Romney said, “and the entire world should be protesting and letting Russia know how badly they’re seen on the world stage.”
The conversation also touched on Romney’s stance during the 2012 presidential election where President Barack Obama tried to ridicule then Governor Romney for asserting that Russia was the number one geopolitical for of the United States.
Instead of remaining humble and choosing this moment to rally Republicans together as the stronger party against these kinds of global threats to international security, Romney took this moment of relevance to foster his own self-importance and to belittle his peers.

Bash addressed a so-called “pro-Putin sentiment” within the Republican party without providing examples, and Romney fed right into the claims opposing American military involvement is somehow equivalent to being a Kremlin supporter.
“Well,” Romney began, “a lot of those people are changing their stripes as they’re seeing the response of the world and the political response here in the U.S.”
“But how anybody in this country which loves freedom can side with Vladimir Putin,” Romney suggested, “which is an oppressor, a dictator, he kills people he imprisons his political opponents. He has been an adversary of America at every chance he’s had. It’s unthinkable to me.”
Romney ratcheted up the accusations, again without examples or drawing attention to any specific member of the Republican party, “It’s almost treasonous, and it just make me ill to see some of these people do that.”
Without any sense of irony, Romney participated in the very kind of behavior he was accusing others of saying, “But of course, they do it because they think it’s shock value and it’s gonna get them more eyeballs and maybe make a little more money for them or their network.”
“It’s disgusting,” he concluded on the matter. “I’m hopeful that you’re seeing some of those people recognize just how wrong they were.”
Bash attempted to ascribe Romney’s statements to former President Donald Trump and when faced with having to affirm any accusations he hedged, “Well I said it’s nearly treasonous.”
Romney’s final thought for the discussion was, “Standing up for freedom is the right thing to do in America. Anything less than that, in my opinion is unworthy of American support.”
The senator demonstrated that he has a long-term memory by holding to his positions from a decade ago while running for president. Perhaps his short-term memory isn’t as prolific as it was little more than a week ago that he and three of his Republican senate colleagues reneged on their duty to the American people by choosing anywhere but the senate chamber when a vote was held to defund the federal vaccine mandates.
Imagine Burr, Inhofe, Romney and Graham thinking that they had something more important than defeating sickening mandates on human bodies. If they don't want to be there for the most important votes they should resign.
