Virginia Democrats displayed what many contend is outright racism, viciously attacking Governor Glenn Youngkin for declaring February 23, 2022, as “Winsome Earle-Sears Day” in honor of the state’s first female, black, veteran lieutenant governor.
Youngkin’s declaration also covered other information about Sears and her extensive accomplishments including her service in the military, her time at the United States Census Bureau, involvement with female veterans, and serving on the Virginia State Board of Education.
Youngkin also noted on his Twitter account that the proclamation was appropriate because of Black History Month.
Regardless of Sears’ stellar reputation and her long and distinguished list of accomplishments, an account under the name of Blue Virginia slammed the proclamation, tweeting, “Can you imagine the reaction if Gov. Ralph Northam had named a day ‘Justin Fairfax Day’ or ‘Mark Herring Day?’ Or if Gov. Bob McDonnell had named a day ‘Ken Cuccinelli Day’ or ‘Bill Bolling Day?’ Beyond parody. ”

Can you imagine the reaction if Gov. Ralph Northam had named a day "Justin Fairfax Day" or "Mark Herring Day?" Or if Gov. Bob McDonnell had named a day "Ken Cuccinelli Day" or "Bill Bolling Day?" Beyond parody. https://t.co/8WWivSnEcI pic.twitter.com/ZPEfEV7Ogb

The user account just recently started allowing replies since it was previously restricted. Many were outraged over the partisan attacks against Sears and were quick to snap back using leftist rules:
Why does @bluevirginia hate black women? Also, did this recognition effect you or anyone else in the Commonwealth? #petty

Speak for yourself. I’m a Virginian and I’m not embarrassed by it. Also, you probably didn’t even know it existed until you saw this tweet. Also, why do you not want to celebrate the accomplishments of our first Lt Gov who is a black female. Are you a racist?

you guys hate Youngkin so much that even when he celebrates black women you criticize it. lol get a grip.

If a democrat did this you would eat it up. Spare me. You’re grasping at straws. No one cares. TF is wrong with you people?

The first Black Female to be Lieutenant Governor in Virginia is a Republican. Consequently, hey @vademocrats your racism is showing. https://t.co/DE9zlnthxc

The left in Virginia apparently has made it their mission to go after Sears since she was elected last November simply because she is a Republican. MSNBC hosts such as Tiffany Cross and Joy Reid have relentlessly attacked her.
It should be noted that Lt. Gov. Sears won against another woman of color, Del. Hala Ayala, who is a Democrat and was very gracious towards Sears when she won the election.
Had she been elected, @HalaAyala would likely not have had the same priorities, but I’d still recognize the historic nature of it. She had the totally awesome response, too, to Winsome being elected and I wish if her own opponent could be happy for her, others would too! pic.twitter.com/LNkLOrqKT6

Younkin’s proclamation was historic:
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, immigrated to the United States at the age of six, and blazed a path as the first female and first female veteran to serve as lieutenant governor and the first Black woman to hold statewide office. Her quintessential leadership is a beacon of light to the Commonwealth of Virginia, exhibited through her sacrifice for others, her dedication to protecting life, and her zeal for improving our education system; and,
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears has shown perseverance, integrity, and a commitment to excellence through her public service: she has served our nation in the United States Marine Corps, as a Presidential appointee to the United States Census Bureau, a distinguished member of the Advisory Committee on Women Veterans to the United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs, and as Vice President of the Virginia State Board of Education; and,
WHEREAS, her sustaining strength is rooted in faith, family, and community and she is guided by the fundamental belief that liberty and equality of every human soul work to unite people through ingenuity, reason, compassion, and commonsense. Her leadership has changed lives for the homeless and given many families a second chance through her prison ministry; and,
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears is to be commended for her leadership toward making our Commonwealth the best place to live, work, and raise a family, I extend my best wishes to Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, her husband Terence, and her lovely family;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize February 23, 2022, as WINSOME EARLE-SEARS DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA and I call this observance to the attention of all our grateful citizens.
Despite criticism from the left in Virginia, Sears is widely popular in the state and appears to be standing by her conservative principles.
