Black Lives Matter activist and former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick has launched a new initiative through his “Know Your Rights Camp” organization that employs board-certified pathologists who will conduct free second autopsies in “police-related” deaths.

The pathologists will disclose preliminary findings and issue final autopsy reports when an officer is involved in a shooting. The autopsies must be authorized by a legal representative and can be requested by a spouse, partner, relative, close friend, or attorney of a person whose death is police-related, according to the Know Your Rights Camp website.

The “Autopsy Initiative” is purportedly an effort to address concerns about the reliability of an initial autopsy conducted in “police-related” deaths and whether the evidence may have been manipulated. The initiative also aims to alleviate fears of potential bias which may affect the medical examiner conducting the autopsy and even the possibility that faulty forensic procedures were used.

“We know that the prison industrial complex, which includes police and policing, strives to protect and serve its interests at all costs,” Kaepernick charged, according to the Associated Press.

“The Autopsy Initiative is one important step toward ensuring that family members have access to accurate and forensically verifiable information about the cause of death of their loved one in their time of need,” the social justice advocate added.

This is Kaepernick’s latest move against police following the 2016 politicized stunt where he knelt during the national anthem at multiple games in an effort to draw attention to the issues of police brutality and racial inequality.

“I am passionate about the Initiative’s impact and look forward to being a resource to victims’ family members who have lost their loved ones due to a police-related death,” Nicole Martin, “Autopsy Initiative” program manager commented via a statement.

“I am extremely enthusiastic about this truly unique program,” pathology coordinator Dr. Cyril Wecht told the Associated Press. “The opportunity to have unbiased second autopsies performed by independent, experienced forensic pathologists in police-related deaths will provide victims’ families with knowledge that the true facts of any such case have been thoroughly analyzed and prepared for appropriate utilization whenever deemed necessary.”

Kaepernick first founded the “Know Your Rights Camp” in 2016 with the stated goal to help “advance the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities through education, self-empowerment, mass-mobilization and the creation of new systems that elevate the next generation of change leaders.”
