Failed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney responded to the events in Ukraine as war threatens to consume the strife-torn country with a not-so-subtle jab at Barack Obama, the man who insulted him over his assertion that Russia was the world’s top geopolitical threat.

In snide remarks that have now come back to haunt him, the then-incumbent President Obama was dismissive to Romney during a 2012 presidential debate when he mockingly said that “the 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because you know the Cold War has been over for 20 years.”

Nearly a decade later Romney has been vindicated as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement, that two pro-Russian “breakaway” regions would be recognized as independent and that military troops would be sent into the areas on a “peacekeeping” mission, has already escalated into a “special military operation” as airstrikes have targeted areas in the rest of the country with a possible full-scale invasion in the offing.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Romney who is now a U.S. Senator for Utah dragged Obama and his former underling, current President Joe Biden down memory lane.

According to Romney, “Putin’s Ukraine invasion is the first time in 80 years that a great power has moved to conquer a sovereign nation. It is without justification, without provocation and without honor.”

“Putin’s impunity predictably follows our tepid response to his previous horrors in Georgia and Crimea, our naive efforts at a one-sided ‘reset,’ and the shortsightedness of ‘America First,'” taking an obligatory shot at his nemesis, former President Donald J. Trump.

“The ’80s called and we didn’t answer,” he said in a blistering shot at Obama.

“The peril of again looking away from Putin’s tyranny falls not just on the people of the nations he has violated, it falls on America as well,” he added. “History shows that a tyrant’s appetite for conquest is never satiated,”

“America and our allies must answer the call to protect freedom by subjecting Putin and Russia to the harshest economic penalties, by expelling them from global institutions, and by committing ourselves to the expansion and modernization of our national defense,” Romney said.

On Monday, Romney ripped into Putin and threw his backing behind a severe NATO response while stopping short of calling for American boots on the ground.

“Vladimir Putin’s KGB mentality drives his malevolent obsession for repression and regression: he shamelessly abuses the sovereignty of a democratic nation to foster his foolhardy dream of rebuilding a soviet empire. The response from NATO must be unified and withering,” Romney tweeted.

It was under Obama’s nose that Putin was able to gain control of the strategically critical Crimea region, a massive failure that continues to reverberate.

And now Biden could end up topping it if Russia is able to gain control over the entirety of Ukraine, a scenario that could play out in the coming weeks with America’s adversaries increasingly emboldened by what they perceive as weakness from the nation’s befuddled leadership.
