As an American “People’s Convoy” takes shape following in the footsteps of Canadian truckers, a political action committee has partnered with truck convoys across the nation to travel to Washington, DC in protest of COVID mandates and overreach by the federal government.

The Great American Patriot Project sent out an email blast on Wednesday urging supporters to join, volunteer for, or donate to the American Truckers Freedom Fund. The email asserts the truckers “represent a movement of peaceful, non-violent Americans from all walks of life who are dissatisfied with the unscientific, unconstitutional government overreach in regards to mandates.”

“It’s time for #AmericanTruckers to stand with truckers all over the world. Don’t be afraid to #HonkHonk. Everybody loves #FreedomHonks,” the PAC proclaims on its website.

The “People’s Convoy” is gaining steam along with other movements and thousands, if not millions, of Americans are supporting them in one form or another. Routes for the convoy include starting points in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, and Fresno, California. The trek will culminate on March 6 in Washington, D.C. A congressional welcome committee is set to meet with the convoy and discuss policy changes according to the organizers.

“I don’t think that anybody wants to be told what to do,” Erica Knight, who is a spokeswoman for the PAC, told Fox News. “They don’t want to deal with these mandates and it’s kind of a way to stand up for all the American people against it.”

As in other countries across the globe, the convoy is inspired by the bravery of Canadian truckers who are still protesting COVID mandates in their country despite the threat of arrest and financial ruin. That movement began a number of weeks ago after truckers were ordered to get vaccinated before they could cross the US/Canadian border. The widespread protests have brought many places in the country to a standstill.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act, giving the country’s government temporary powers to deal with the protests, including using tough legal and financial measures against participating truckers. Trudeau reportedly made the move after President Joe Biden urged him to do so.

“I’m sure that having a bunch of protesting and standing up for their rights [truckers] are definitely part of the inspiration here,” Knight noted.

Donations made through the PAC would avoid the “limitations” of sites such as GoFundMe, which blocked the release of almost $10 million in donations to Canadian protestors two weeks ago. They cited “the promotion of violence and harassment” in Ottawa as an excuse to freeze the funds.

Facebook pages promoting convoys have also been taken down over purported references to conspiracy theories and links to extremist groups.

The “People’s Convoy” is set to depart in late February and travel to the nation’s Capitol to protest COVID mandates they believe are unconstitutional. An estimated 1,000 US truck drivers are set to participate, according to Newsweek and that number is growing daily.

“This is about our rights, as well as the freedom of future generations,” organizers of the convoy wrote on Facebook. “It’s not about political parties, but more so about a government that has forgotten its place and has no regard for our founding fathers’ instructions.”

“Our brothers and sisters of the highway succeeded in opening Canadians’ eyes about the unconstitutional mandates and hardships forced onto their people,” the organizers of the convoy stated on Facebook. “Now it’s time for the citizens of the United States of America to unite and demand restoration of our constitutional rights.”
