Ottawa, Ontario, authorities, who already have warned peaceful, anti-COVID-mandate Freedom Convoy protesters to leave the downtown area or face severe penalties, appear to be threatening to hold the dissidents’ dogs hostage and then schedule them for a fast-track adoption.

Or maybe something worse.

In a social media message, the city of Ottawa’s By-law and Regulatory Services Branch, a municipal law enforcement agency, put animal lovers who are participating in the Freedom Convoy and presumably wind up being arrested on notice:

“Attention animal owners at demonstration: If you are unable to care for your animal as a result of enforcement actions, your animal will [be]placed into protective care for 8 days, at your cost. After 8 days, if arrangements are not made, your animal will be considered relinquished.”

How a trucker subject to an “enforcement action” and with a bank account frozen by the Trudeau government can access the funds to get his or her dog out of the lockup within eight days is another matter.

“We are going to take back the entirety of the downtown core and every occupied space,” Interim Police Chief Steve Bell has vowed, the Washington Post reported. “You will be hearing and seeing these actions in the coming days.”

“Police on Wednesday handed demonstrators fliers in English and French telling them to leave or face arrest. They warned that participants who are convicted of crimes could be barred from entering the United States. They handed out leaflets to protesters again Thursday morning,” the Post added.

The news outlet also confirmed the pet “protective care” advisory.

For supporters of anti-mandate demonstrations, which includes many truckers and others who are fully COVID vaccinated, these developments suggest that authoritarian regimes have vitiated police-community relations in the context of civil liberties during the pandemic era.

Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, and various European cities are unfortunate examples.

Apart from those already hostile to the Freedom Convoy in the ends-justify-the-means cohort, Ontario’s version of coercive doggy daycare is hardly getting treated kindly on Twitter. Here is just a sample:
