Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont (D) is under fire from a Second Amendment defense group for proposals they say will be a detriment to law-abiding citizens.
In Lamont’s briefing, he laid out what he called “commonsense proposals that are focused on protecting our neighborhoods, stopping the illegal flow of guns into our state, and providing law enforcement and the communities they serve with the resources they need to address the root causes of violence.”

The Connecticut Citizens Defense League (CCDL), issued a terse statement in response to Lamont’s proposal, emphasizing the numerous flaws it contains.
Foremost, the CCDL’s statement highlights that “roughly 70% of gun offenses in Connecticut today are not prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” before pointing out that most committed with firearms in the state are done so by persons who are already prohibited to possess one.
The organization that describes itself as a “non-partisan, grassroots organization…especially dedicated to protecting the unalienable rights of all citizens to keep and bear arms, for the defense of both self and state,” goes on to point out that with his proposal, Lamont was “demonstrating his indifference between criminals and law-abiding gun owners.”
The CCDL also said that Lamont is attempting to resurrect policies that the legislature has already rejected pertaining to so-called “stop and frisk” measures. “This unconstitutional requirement to show carry permits without cause would open the door for harassment and profiling.”
These measures, they said, are “contradictory to the spirit of the very laws [Lamont] signed,” in the previous year to reduce the number of police interactions in urban communities.
In regards to a portion of Lamont’s proposal for a Statewide Firearms Trafficking Task Force, the CCDL attests that the original task force should never have been defunded and that the “Governor’s office is turning to only a small facet” of the solution that their organization has always supported as “a true common sense solution to gun crimes.”
Lastly, the CCDL points out that since Lamont took office in 2019, the demand for legal gun ownership has increased in the state. “In 2021 alone,” the statement reads, “tens of thousands of Connecticut residents became new permit holders. Background checks for firearm purchases soared to record setting numbers.”
Lamont’s administration has made the claim that the new proposals build on a “record of support for public safety,” that the governor has held since taking office.
On the contrary, the CCDL concludes that Lamont’s “proposals demonstrate he is out of touch…and woefully disconnected from his own failed policies” that have driven more Connecticut residents to “demand…more access to self-defense.”
Others drew the same conclusions that the CCDL had.
Seems we are blaming and punishing legal gun owners, while coddling criminals. Legally carrying a gun in CT, isn’t “brandishing”. And the notion that police are helpless in identifying the legality in someone carrying isn’t true. Criminals don’t open-carry, or follow the law.

This will do nothing to address the root cause of violence. This will do nothing to stop criminals from obtaining firearms illegally. This will penalize legal and law abiding gun owners.

Sounds like you’re just trying to turn legal gun owners into criminals with the flick of a pen but okay.
