Fans who bought tickets to see comedian Heather McDonald’s show in Tempe, AZ over the weekend were witnesses to an incident that was no laughing matter when she suddenly collapsed right after she told a joke about her vaccination status.

The 51-year-old standup comic was performing at the Tempe Improv and had just started her act when she fell, striking her head in front of an audience that initially thought that it was a part of her routine before reality set in. McDonald was attended to by a nurse and EMT who were in attendance before an ambulance arrived to take her to a local hospital.

Celebrity website TMZ which reported the news was told by eyewitnesses that McDonald fell to the floor after her jab at the unvaccinated, “I’m vaxxed, double vaxxed, boosted … and flu shot and shingle shot and haven’t gotten COVID and Jesus loves me most,” she reportedly said in her second joke of the sold-out performance.

“As soon as she delivered the joke, she just collapsed and hit her head on the floor. Everyone thought at first it was all part of the act, but it was not. She was conscious, but clearly, all was not well. An EMT and a nurse happened to be in the audience … they rushed up on stage to provide first aid,” TMZ reported.

The “Chelsea Lately” star suffered a fractured skull from the fall and updated her fans from the hospital via her Instagram account, “So, I’m in the emergency room, I look weird,” she began. “Oh my God, I’m so, so, so, so sorry.”

“I got up, I did one joke and I felt so dizzy,” she said. “You can see my eye, I fell on my eye. Oh my God, I cannot believe this happened, I feel so terrible that they had to tell everyone to leave and then cancel the second show.”

“I’ve never, ever fainted in my life,” she added.

“Thus far the test have revealed no underlying medical issues that may have precipitated this event,” a rep for McDonald told People Magazine, adding that she did not consume any alcohol prior or during the show.

“She may have lost consciousness because of dehydration. She was tested and does not have COVID,” her management team said in a statement. “She might be released later today.”

Fellow comedian Justin Martindale who was performing with her gave her a shout out on Twitter, “Heather McDonald is a champ. Thank you Tempe for coming out tonight. It was definitely scary but she has her family with her now. And we will see you next time juicer than ever.”

Twitter users opined on her fall with some appearing to suggest that the vaccines had something to do with it while others took exception with her use of the lord and savior’s name as a punchline.

McDonald promised fans that she would return to Tempe at a later date.
