Shocking dashcam footage from inside Florida man Eric Popper’s vehicle shows him opening fire at another driver while on the I-95 highway in Miami-Dade County.
Popper’s attorney Robert Gershman claims the shooting, which occurred on June 21, 2021, was justified, as his client heard something hit his car with a loud bang. Believing he was being shot at, Popper pulled out his own firearm and returned fire at the vehicle. He pulled over and dialed 911, and can be heard telling on video the police he believed he was shot at in the audio from a separate dashcam video.
“I was just shot at. My car was hit,” Popper explained. “I returned fire back at the individual.”
“You hear a bang on Mr. Popper’s car, akin to a gunshot, which precipitated the whole incident, so in this matter, the audio and video evidence we believe exonerates him,” Gershman said in a statement as reported by NBC 6 Miami.
Watch:
At the time, police chalked it up to two drivers exchanging gunfire in a road rage incident, but the other driver involved maintains that he did not shoot at Popper, and that he merely threw a water bottle at his vehicle, according to NBC 6.
In the video, Popper can be seen retrieving his gun from the center console, appearing to be quite calm. He holds onto it for a while, appearing to hide it from the view of other vehicles, before another car speeds up alongside him. Then, he can be seen firing at that vehicle.
Popper was arrested after turning himself in to the police. He bonded out and is facing charges of aggravated assault with a firearm and shooting/throwing a deadly missile, which are second-degree felonies. He could be looking at 15 years in prison if he is found guilty.
Twitter was split on whether the shooting was justified:
It's justified to shoot blindly on a crowded highway if you're scared? You chose to live like that?
