A black author and academic is making the rounds to promote his new book which calls out the new trend towards “woke racism” on the left.

For Professor Greg Patton, it was just another day giving the same lecture on business communication that he had for years at the University of Southern California. When he made a point about conversation padding with words like “um” or “you know,” Patton took a moment for his Chinese exchange students to make an example using a common Mandarin equivalent, which sounds somewhat like “nay-guh,” and is used in the same context as “uhhh” and “um” in English.

This led to Patton being swiftly suspended, since several black students had complained that he had been racist, and that they had been made to feel “less than,” and that their professor had robbed them of “peace and well-being,” insisting that he be immediately fired, Daily Mail reported.

Patton was eventually able to recover his job, but only after there was an outcry from black American expats in China who claimed they had frequently heard the term in conversation (it is, after all, as common as “um” is for English speakers,) without suffering undue distress, while Mandarin speakers jumped in to say that the complaint effectively amounted to censoring of their language and culture, making them the real victims of racism.

The ridiculous situation is one of the examples given by John McWhorter, author, columnist and professor at Columbia University, in his new book “Woke Racism: How a New Religion Has betrayed Black America.” The book obviously deals with the new “woke” brand of anti-racism popular in the young urban left.

McWhorter alleges that the “woke” movement is like a cult of self-hatred and public self-flagellation — an excommunication of heretics who don’t bend the knee. McWhorter said this new cult that pretends to be the defender of minorities and particularly black Americans is actually doing the opposite, hurting the very people it claims to be championing.

He also stated that this cult is a “catalogue of contradictions” that dictates that the only “original sin” is being born white. According to McWhorter, this new religion seeks to impose a permanent blood-guilt on white people, and teach black people that their lives are wholly defined by oppression, in a permanent victimhood.

One could imagine the outcry if McWhorter was a white conservative, and the author himself notes this, saying that “A version of this book by a white writer would be blithely dismissed as racist.” As is, McWhorter says he is routinely referred to as a “traitor” and even a “heretic.”

While its easy to see how white people would be losers in this worldview of inherent, inescapable racism and guilt, McWhorter insists that this is directly harmful to blacks, by teaching them that the things they will need to get ahead in life, such as scholastic effort, punctuality, and work ethic are “white things” that they need to divest themselves of in order to “de-colonialize.”

For McWhorter, the reason is because the proponents are far more interested in looking good to their liberal friends than in actually helping anybody. McWhorter points to the “Defund the Police” campaign, which he says has nothing to do with preventing police brutality and everything to do with virtue signaling, and which has as its effect a weakening of policing in the worst neighborhoods, which leaves blacks even more vulnerable to being victimized by criminals.

“The ideology in question is one under which white people calling themselves our saviors make black people look like the dumbest, weakest, most self-indulgent beings in the history of our species, and teach black people to revel in that status,” McWhorter wrote.

While the book is unlikely to be well-received by the left-wing, it certainly shows that there is absolutely not a consensus within black America that the woke left is benefiting anyone – including them.
