Lawrence Jones vows to keep it real for his new Fox News show: ‘I’m too country to try and be fancy’

Fox News is about to get a more personal touch as a libertarian political commentator, Lawrence Jones, announces a new show that will focus on average, everyday people who don’t normally get to have a platform from which to voice their views.

“Lawrence Jones Cross Country” debuts on the network Saturday and the 29-year-old host wants to keep it real.

“They don’t want all this high-class talk,” Jones told Fox News Digital of his anticipated audience. “They want something that is simple, and related, and that they care about.”

“I’m from Texas,” Jones added, “and I’m too country to try and be fancy… if I try and start talking all high class, I’m going to butcher the word. I’m just gonna be me, and we’ll see what happens.”

It’s an approach many of his fans welcome. As he’s been a regular guest and analyst on Fox News, viewers are wondering, what took the network so long?

The outpouring of congratulatory message hit home for the young host, who shared the accomplishment with his friends, family, and community.

“It’s not just a moment for me, but it’s a moment for my family, my community… I saw my friends from back home sharing an article from the Dallas Morning News saying, ‘Hey, I was in class with him,’ or, ‘I know him.’ That was a moment that touched me the most,” the Garland, Texas native said.

He intends on using the people he grew up around as a guide for his new show.

“I really want to serve them, but also, that is like my compass,” he said. “If the people back home can’t understand the content I’m putting out, then I’m really not serving the audience.”

Jones’s path to his own show began in 2018 when Fox News executive Lauren Petterson discovered him doing radio and took him on. Since then, Jones has filled in as a guest host or stepped up as a contributor on many Fox News shows, including “Fox & Friends” and “Fox News Primetime.”

With the debut of “Lawrence Jones Cross Country,” Jones “will become the youngest Black solo host on cable news,” according to Fox News.

While honored by the opportunity, Jones plans on simply continuing to be himself, a strategy that has clearly been paying off well for him.

“I started at Fox with no experience,” he said. “They brought me in. I was a college student. I’ve always been me… They’ve given me this incredible opportunity to have my own show. [Critics] can say whatever they want about us. The proof is in the pudding.”

Jones acknowledged the support and guidance he’s received from Fox News hosts Dana Perino and Sean Hannity along the way.

“Those are like my two confidants,” Jones said. “You know, if I have any advice that I need, those are the first two people that are going to call me on my stuff, tell me how I can grow.”

While the focus of the new show will be current events and analysis of the day’s stories, Jones does want to bring a bit of levity to his hour on air.

“There’s so much heavy stuff going on in the world, but we also want to give the audience an opportunity to breathe throughout the show,” he said. “There’s a lot going on — a lot of chaos, crime, the border, inflation — things that have people in a funk. So, we’re going to cover that and make it personal. But we’re also going to talk about football. We want to talk about some of the positive stuff happening across the country, some of the heart-pulling stories that are going to make them smile and have fun as well.”

As for any last-minute advice?

Jones refers back to one of his mentors: “Hannity told me when I first got into this business, ‘Just be L.J.”

“Lawrence Jones Cross Country” will air on Saturdays at 10 p.m. ET on Fox News Channel.
