‘She goes crazy’: Tlaib ripped by primary challenger for ‘carrying the water of Palestine’

Radical leftist Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) will likely face off against a challenger who rejects the “Squad” member’s antisemitic rhetoric in a primary bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives this fall.

“When she gets that mic in front of her, she goes crazy and goes to many extremes,” Shanelle Jackson, who previously served from 2007 – 2012 as a Michigan state representative, explained to the Jewish Insider in a phone interview.

“I really feel like it’s now or never as it pertains to being able to sort of shut her down and calm down some of the antisemitic rhetoric,” the 41-year-old explained.

Tlaib – the only Palestinian-American to hold a seat in Congress – has frequently been accused of making antisemitic statements

“We cannot be talking only about Israelis’ need for safety at a time when Palestinians are living under a violent apartheid system,” Tlaib said last September when she voted against funding the Iron Dome defense system in Israel, calling the Israeli government “an apartheid regime.”


Jackson sees the Democratic House primary contest as a “great opportunity” and plans to launch her campaign for the newly drawn 12th Congressional District seat in mid-February. The seat is currently held by Rep. Brenda Lawrence (D-MI) who has announced plans to retire when her term is up.

“I think right now is the moment,” Jackson said. “It’s almost palpable in the city of Detroit and in this region: Black women are stepping up in leadership. We’re hungry to have our voice in the room and at the table.”

Although Tlaib, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has represented the 13th Congressional District since 2019, she will seek to spend her third term in the 12th Congressional District seat which is up for grabs in the Aug. 2 primary.

Jackon slammed Tlaib for rejecting a two-state solution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine claiming, “She obviously is carrying the water of Palestine in all that she does.”

“Just saying it real plain, I believe that the United States and Israel are sisters, and I can’t imagine living in a world where our nation didn’t have Israel’s back,” said Jackson, an evangelical Christian. “It’s heartbreaking, to be honest with you, to have Rep. Tlaib not even wanting to explore that path.”

Jackson sees parallels with the history of her black ancestors and that of the Jewish community and believes that will resonate with Jewish voters in the district.

“I want to convey to the Jewish community that, as an African-American woman, to me, our stories are extremely similar,” she said. “We can look at the history of the civil rights movement, we can look at our shared history here in this country.”

Jackson and Tlaib are currently the only candidates vying for the congressional seat which includes parts of Detroit.

“I think she is definitely in for a challenge,” Jackson said. “The district is right for that.”
