House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has rejected a request to voluntarily cooperate with the Democrats’ select committee on the so-called “insurrection,” snubbing his leftist colleagues whom he accused of abusing their power, a move that isn’t likely to sit well with Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
On Wednesday, the California Republican responded to a letter of invitation from the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack at the U.S. Capitol inviting him to discuss what it called “a range of critical topics,” most importantly, his conversations with then-President Donald J. Trump whom Democrats seek to disqualify from seeking another White House term.
According to the committee’s letter, “We write to request your voluntary cooperation with our investigation on a range of critical topics, including your conversations with President Trump before, during and after the violent January 6th attack.”
“You have acknowledged speaking directly with the former President while the violence was underway on January 6th. And you summarized your conclusions regarding President Trump’s conduct on January 6th in a speech you made January 13th on the House floor,” the committee wrote.
The select committee also issued a press release announcing that McCarthy had been summoned.
With the media smear machine that has backstopped Pelosi’s politically-motivated charade whirring into action, McCarthy released a statement of his own rejecting the legitimacy of Pelosi’s inquisition which he condemned for what he described as its “abuse of power that stains this institution today and will harm it going forward.”

According to McCarthy: “This committee is not conducting a legitimate investigation as Speaker Pelosi took the unprecedented action of rejecting the Republican members I named to serve on the committee. It is not serving any legislative purpose. The committee’s only objective is to attempt to damage its political opponents – acting like the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee one day and the DOJ the next.”
“The committee has demanded testimony from staffers who applied for First Amendment permits. It has subpoenaed the call records of private citizens and their financial records from banks while demanding secrecy not supported by law,” he continued.
“It has lied about the contents of documents it has received. It has held individuals in contempt of Congress for exercising their Constitutional right to avail themselves of judicial proceedings. And now it wants to interview me about public statements that have been shared with the world, and private conversations not remotely related to the violence that unfolded at the Capitol. I have nothing else to add,” he continued.
“As a representative and the leader of the minority party, it is with neither regret nor satisfaction that I have concluded to not participate with this select committee’s abuse of power that stains this institution today and will harm it going forward,” McCarthy concluded.
McCarthy and Pelosi previously clashed over the nature of the 1/6 investigation when Madame Speaker rejected his picks to seat two Republicans on the committee – Indiana Rep. Jim Banks and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio – in a blatant effort to stifle critical voices and control what evidence would be presented.
McCarthy condemned the move as “an egregious abuse of power” and pulled his five nominations which led to Pelosi’s hand-picking of two Republicans to present an illusion of bipartisanship when she tabbed Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, both of whom are extremely hostile to Trump and his supporters and enthusiastically joined Democrats on impeachment.
Cheney, who appears to have been harboring a vicious grudge against McCarthy since he removed her from her House leadership position last year, suggested to a CNN producer that a subpoena could be in the offing.

Democrats and Cheney face a major shellacking in the upcoming midterms and time is growing short to complete their dirty work which could include removing elected GOP representatives from Congress, an idea that has been gaining currency with Dems who, it seems, are preparing to go scorched earth to retain political power.
