A Republican senator who drew the ire of former President Donald J. Trump after a Sunday morning talk show appearance doubled down, further rejecting the idea that there was widespread fraud in the 2020 election and calling for all party members to do the same.

Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota responded to an email statement in which Trump called him a “jerk” while vowing to never endorse him again. Rounds easily won reelection to the seat last year with the support of the ex-POTUS who also accused him of being “weak and ineffective” as well as asking “is he crazy or just stupid?”

On Monday, Rounds sent out a statement of his own saying that he was “disappointed but not surprised” by Trump’s reaction, praising former VP Mike Pence for acting with “integrity” by acknowledging current President Joe Biden’s legitimacy and expressing his opinion that it’s time for the party to look forward and not backward.

“I’m disappointed but not surprised by the former president’s reaction. However, the facts remain the same. I stand by my statement. The former president lost the 2020 election,” Rounds wrote.

Rounds also wrote that there was “no evidence of widespread voter fraud that would have altered the results of the election” and that “nearly all of my Senate Republican colleagues acknowledged this last January, during the Electoral certification process.”

He emphasized his opinion that the party needs to address the “challenges our nation faces today” including inflation, the border crisis, and Afghanistan, a country that has once again become a hotbed of extremism after Biden cut and run, turning it over to the Taliban and abandoning Americans who were unable to evacuate in the process.

Rounds concluded, “As a Republican Party, our focus should be on what lies ahead, not what’s in the past. Elections are about growing support for your party, not further dividing it. Attacking Republicans certainly isn’t going to result in a winning formula. Neither is telling citizens not to vote. If we are going to win in 2022 and 2024, we have to move forward together.”

The second term senator’s pushback against Trump was well-received by Senate colleague Mitt Romney who took to Twitter to express his support.

“Mike Rounds speaks truth knowing that our Republic depends upon it. Republicans like Govs Hutchinson, Baker & Hogan; Sens McConnell, Thune & Johnson; Bush & Cheney; plus 60+ courts and even the right-leaning Wall Street Journal editorial page agree: Joe Biden won the election,” tweeted Mitt.

The failed presidential candidate who fumbled away a winnable election against Barack Obama in 2012 – or as Trump put it “choked like a dog” – has nurtured a vendetta against a man whom he once begged for his endorsement since the 2016 primaries when the bombastic billionaire outsider made mincemeat out of a field of establishment Republicans in a contest that “Pierre Delecto” chose to sit out.

Romney, who joined Democrats in both of their failed impeachment efforts against Trump, was predictably one of the first Republicans to congratulate Biden following the election, the day after he said that Trump was “within his rights to request recounts” in disputed areas.

The nation’s 45th president lashed out at Sen. Rounds following his appearance on ABC’s “This Week” where he chatted with longtime Clinton ally George Stephanopoulos and insisted that Biden won in an election that was “fair, as far as we’ve seen,” while ABC played footage of the so-called “insurrection” at the U.S. Capitol last year which is being used by Democrats as a basis for disqualifying Trump in 2024.

While the resilient Trump continues to exercise vast influence over the GOP – much to the dismay of the RINOs – Senator Rounds won’t face reelection again until 2026, allowing him to elevate his profile by saddling up with the Never Trumpers who are desperately trying to head the former POTUS off at the pass, a common goal that they share with Democrats.
