Despite spending a reported 1,653 minutes (27.55 hours) combined last Thursday obsessing over the Jan. 6th riot and its one-year anniversary, CNN and MSNBC reportedly got spanked by Fox News in the ratings department.
“With the formal total clocking in at 1,653 minutes and two seconds (and translating to 27 hours, 33 minutes, and two seconds), MSNBC’s 838 minutes and 33 seconds surprisingly beat out the perpetually degrading and perhaps most insufferable CNN, which had 814 minutes and 29 seconds,” NewsBusters has confirmed.
“That monstrosity of a number came on top of the fact that … the major broadcast networks of ABC, CBS, and NBC spent almost 90 minutes on their two-hour morning newscasts and just over 38 minutes on their 30-minute evening newscasts.”
NewsBusters is a news site run by the Media Research Center, a conservative organization dedicated to holding the establishment press accountable.
Unlike CNN and MSNBC, Fox News chose to only mildly cover the riot’s anniversary. And even then, its hosts and guests focused primarily on the media’s gross distortion of what actually happened, in addition to attempts by them and Democrats to use the one-day event as a cudgel against all conservatives.
For this — for not toeing the Democrat Party line — the network faced rampant criticism from establishment press “journalists” like CNN’s Oliver Darcy and Brian Stelter:
Lead story on Fox’s morning show today, all three hours: Covid, Biden admin’s failures, “maskless” liberal lawmakers, Chicago schools. Lead story on all the other major morning shows: 1/6 anniversary.
— Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) January 6, 2022
Only a few brief references of 1/6 on Fox’s A.M. show today. Generic mentions about Biden’s upcoming speech, plus this Brian Kilmeade POV: Biden “wants to talk only about January 6 and blame Donald Trump because he thinks that’s the only thing he’s going to get high ratings for.”
— Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) January 6, 2022
What’s remarkable (yet also entirely predictable) is that on Fox and in the larger right-wing media ecosystem, Biden and the news media are getting more criticism during discussions pertaining to January 6 than … the former President who incited the attack on the US Capitol.

Really hard to overstate the fervor of anti-media rhetoric coming out of places like Fox today. While the press is covering the one-year anniversary of 1/6, right-wing media personalities are bashing journalists for doing so. That’s the crux of a large part of their coverage.

But according to previously reported Nielsen data, both CNN and MSNBC greatly under-performed Fox News, ratings-wise.
“Thursday saw Fox’s 1.77 million total average day viewers significantly beat CNN’s 845,000 and MSNBC’s 1.18 million. During prime time, Fox’s average of 2.83 million total day viewers led CNN’s 1.14 million and MSNBC’s 1.92 million,” Mediaite reported last week.
Fox News’ host Tucker Carlson, who’s especially despised by the establishment press, drew an estimated 3.5 million viewers at 8:00 pm that evening. Conversely, CNN’s “Live From the Capitol” drew in only 1.2 million. Even MSNBC’s “All In” attracted more viewers (1.5 million).
The difference in performance between Fox News’ “The Five” and CNN’s “The Lead” was even starker:

Critics of MSNBC and CNN have been eager to highlight these ratings to the ratings’ various hosts — particularly CNN’s Darcy and Stelter, who’re supposed to be media critics yet report almost exclusively on Fox News and only Fox News — in hopes of inspiring some much-needed introspection in them.

Fox finished first in the ratings that day. Meanwhile, CNN was last. Tell us, very serious media reporter man, what does that tell you about your coverage choices?
— Jordan Perhosky (@perhosky_j) January 8, 2022
This guys dreams about Fox News every night and wakes up a little moist.
No wonder your ratings are in the tank, you have nothing real to report on. No-one give a shit about Hannity’s texts.
Why don’t you try to get Ray Epps texts?
— Woke Parasite (@MidwestguyOH) January 8, 2022
Not enough for CNN to have Stelter’s whole career based on obsessing over FOX.
They have to have 2 full time employees deep-diving FOX?Could just be research to see why CNN ratings suck so horribly.🤷🏾♂️

The animosity seen above likely stems from the fact that the talking heads at these networks dedicate so many resources to insulting not only Fox News hosts but its viewers as well.
