Fox News medical contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier appeared on the network’s “Fox and Friends” Thursday to shed light on what some are calling “Flurona,” a medical condition so named for those who have been diagnosed as having COVID-19 and the flu simultaneously.
Host Ainsley Earhardt laid out examples of the condition, noting that the CDC has reported only 79 cases of the double infection so far in the entire nation.
Dr. Saphier said, “I love the way that the media loves to sensationalize something, and I guess this will be our new headline for the next month.”
She explained that the “Flurona” is not a new mutagenic or variant of the COVID virus, rather it’s simply part of getting sick. She added that many children were testing positive last summer for both COVID and RSV and that any illness is often is caused by more than one factor.
Why is Flurona a thing?
Before people flip thinking there is a newly mutated virus, it’s just someone positive for Covid and Flu.
Kids have been dual testing positive with SARS-CoV-2 and RSV since the summer so it’s no surprise we are seeing Covid/Flu.

The rate of hospitalization for COVID in children during pre-vaccine times, she observed, was about what it was for the flu. While there is nothing out of the ordinary, it is simply a matter of keeping an eye on any rising numbers in hospitalizations for the condition, though the media will likely continue to do what it does best and gin up unnecessary fear to keep citizens in a “perpetual state of panic.”
Earhardt pointed to the startling contrast in a CDC report from December that stated that at the time there were 57,705 cases of hospitalization for COVID, but only 1,825 for the flu.
“Which one is more serious, in your opinion? Omicron or the flu?” she asked Saphier.
The doctor responded that both could be considered low-risk for otherwise healthy children and adults. But the flu, in particular, can be severe for children under five, especially if they also tested positive for RSV. Hence, she added, why flu shots are recommended for all children.
Saphier said any rise in flu cases can likely be attributed to the resumption of international travel, so there are seasonal spikes in cases just like any other year prior to when America lost its collective mind over a virus out of Wuhan, China that may or may not be the result of nefarious practices.
“We have to tune our mindset into not just having a flu season, but we’re going to have a flu and COVID season,” Saphier concluded.
In addition to vaccines and boosters, there are new therapeutics and retro-fitted drugs to combat COVID-19. So, she said, the country is in a much better place than it was at the outset of the pandemic.
Still, however, she made no mention of personal health improvements that individuals can manipulate in order to avoid certain illnesses like COVID. Though there are some public figures who place an emphasis on that, the louder voices are the ones who get heard, and a focus on that positive messaging is lacking on both sides of the political aisle.

@NBSaphierMD why is Flurona a thing? Easy. The media and politicians are framing the narrative to keep the pandemic going and the fear alive.
