Republican Sen. Marco Rubio dished out a harsh dose of reality as he blasted the “irrational hysteria” surrounding the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus on New Year’s Eve.

And while he made no mention of the media, Rubio offered an equal dose of skepticism over what’s being reported.

“Record numbers testing positive for a sore throat isn’t a crisis. And people in the hospital for car accidents testing positive isn’t a surge,” the Florida senator tweeted on Friday morning.

“The real crisis is the irrational hysteria which has people with no symptoms waiting hours for a test or missing work for 10 days,” he explained.

Although Florida shattered their previous single-day record for COVID-19 with 75,900 cases tallied on New Year’s Eve, Rubio’s tweet alludes to the fact that there have been several indications that the variant is significantly milder than previous variants and shouldn’t necessarily be cause for alarm. A recent study from Japanese and American researchers revealed that Omicron doesn’t wreak as much havoc on the lungs, nose, and throat. A British study suggests that the risk of hospitalization is reduced by two-thirds with Omicron as compared to its predecessor, the Delta variant.

Rubio doubled down on the dose of pragmatic sanity with a tweet later that day praising those packing into the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida to watch the Michigan Wolverines and Georgia Bulldogs face off in the 88th Annual Orange Bowl.

“Very happy to see a packed stadium for tonight’s #OrangeBowl,” he wrote. “There is no reason to close, limit or cancel anything. Ignore the hysteria & have a great New Years Eve!”

But the left is so entrenched in perpetuating their own fear and politicization of individual health choices that they weren’t buying his rationalism on social media and instead had a virtual meltdown down like Frosty on a sunny day.

Here’s a sampling of some of those responses from Twitter:
