New Yorkers rang in the new year with hopes of better times to come now that the ruinous tenure of Bill de Blasio has officially come to an end leaving incoming Mayor Eric Adams with a gigantic mess to clean up as he seeks to reverse the damage done by his predecessor.

The degree to which de Blasio was detested that transcended party lines was expressed perfectly by Andy Cohen who co-hosted CNN’s New Year’s Eve celebration along with anchor Anderson Cooper who futilely tried to restrain his colleague during his epic rant.

“Watching Mayor de Blasio do his victory lap dance after four years of the crappiest term as the mayor of New York… the only thing Republicans and Democrats can agree on is what a horrible mayor he has been so… sayonara sucker!” Cohen said, a sentiment likely shared by millions whose lives were upended by de Blasio’s ideological crusade and unmatched arrogance.

De Blasio’s replacement assumed his new job following the traditional dropping of the ball at the annual New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square, taking the stage where he held up a framed picture of his late mother as he was sworn in by Associate Justice Sylvia Hinds-Radix of the state’s Supreme Court.

“I, Eric Adams, do solemnly swear, that I will support the Constitution of the United States, the constitution of the state of New York, and the charter of the city of New York, and I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of the mayor of the city of New York, to the best of my abilities, so help me God,” he repeated as he placed his hand on a family bible held by his son while surrounded by family members.

Mayor Adams took to Twitter with holiday wishes for New Yorkers, “Happy New Year, New York! I’m so excited about the future of the greatest City in the world, and humbled to be your Mayor,” he wrote. “Tonight, let’s (safely!) celebrate. Tomorrow the work begins!”

The new mayor’s 22 years of experience as a police officer will be instrumental as he tries to tackle the crime wave unleashed by de Blasio who wore his contempt for New York’s finest on his sleeve like a badge of honor as he promoted the agenda of the militant Black Lives Matter movement during last summer’s riots and looting and proudly stripped $1 billion for the police budget while criminals ran amok.

One who is optimistic that better times are ahead is Pat Lynch, the president of the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York who spoke with Fox News Digital.

“We have a new year coming ahead of us and we’re optimistic about a new mayor, a new police commissioner, a new department that we can take this city back and make it better and hopefully healthier for everyone, happy New Year” he said, as remnants of the celebration’s confetti floated in the air.

Adams has his work cut out for him with the Big Apple recording its highest number of murders in a decade with lesser crimes also at a level where law-abiding citizens have good reason to fear going outside, a sordid legacy of de Blasio that the new mayor must quickly reverse if he is to ultimately be successful.

The now-former mayor spent his second to last day at the helm of what used to be America’s greatest city making the media rounds and patting himself on the back during three press conferences, being forced to move one indoors to avoid a boisterous crowd of protesters who gathered at City Hall making noise and carrying signs with slogans including “Buh-bye sh*t head!” as they gave Hizzoner a sendoff.

Adams will be facing fierce resistance from the criminal-coddling activist left as he attempts to make the city’s streets safe again. including from BLM with one leader warning of riots, fire, and bloodshed if he brings back the plainclothes unit that was disbanded by de Blasio last year.

Whether he is able to reverse Gotham’s steep decline that was engineered by de Blasio remains to be seen but New Yorkers who have suffered immensely over the last eight years have reason to hope that their days of darkness could finally be over.
