UCLA decided that they would pull out of the Holiday Bowl, set to take place in San Diego, just hours before kickoff as a number of their players tested positive for COVID.

Claiming the “protocols within the Bruins’ program” prevented them from playing out the game against North Carolina, UCLA announced their decision on Twitter, much to the dismay of Outkick’s Clay Travis.

“UCLA just pulled out of the Holiday Bowl a few hours before kickoff. What in the world are we doing?” Travis fumed. “No college athletes should be getting tested for covid. They’re all 100% fine. Most have no idea if they even have it. This is a total farce. Embarrassing.”

The head coach of the opposing North Carolina State team was not happy, feeling that they were kept in the dark and only told at the last minute after traveling across the country for the game.

“Felt lied to, to be honest,” Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren stated, according to ESPN. “We felt like UCLA probably knew something was going on, didn’t tell anybody on our side. We had no clue they were up against that. I don’t feel like it was very well handled from their university. It would have been great to have had a heads-up two or three days ago so we could have found a Plan B. Disappointing.”

But luckily the UCLA team got to see Sea World before they all got sick!

Videos and photos of the players (both masked and unmasked) were posted to Instagram, as the team excitedly announced that they were taking a Christmas trip to the famous tourist attraction.

Some Twitter users thought it was quite strange that the group had such a lively celebration just days ago, only to suddenly realize they can’t play hours before the Holiday Bowl was supposed to start. (Some dedicated fans had flown out from North Carolina to see the game, and one has to imagine they were less than impressed with the announcement.)
