MSNBC doctor touts ‘negative incentives’, argues unvaxxed should be moved to back of treatment line

MSNBC medical analyst Dr. Vin Gupta hypocritically cited his own warped version of bioethics while telling MSNBC’s Joy Reid on Wednesday that unvaccinated COVID patients should be moved lower on the treatment list than those who have been fully inoculated against the virus.

Gupta, who is a pulmonologist, gave his stilted opinion during a segment discussing the left’s hyped explosion of COVID cases due to the Omicron variant. Reid feigned exasperation to the good doctor and opened the door for him to declare that COVID cases should be treated like those waiting for an organ transplant when it comes to the unvaccinated.

“I’m sort of reaching my kind of peak fatigue, mental fatigue level, and I’m not even dealing with what the doctor and what you guys are dealing with in real life,” whined Reid. “But it’s like, I know just off the top of my head, at least a half dozen people who have gotten COVID, who are vaccinated, but who got it in settings where they were around mixed groups or were with people who were not necessarily vaccinated.”

The MSNBC scaremonger quoted models projecting 140 million new COVID cases over the next two months. Omicron is widely thought to be potentially as mild as a cold and will become the dominant variant in the pandemic. She then turned to Gupta asking his sage leftist advice on the development.

“We have to move away from this paradigm of even thinking about caseloads day over day,” Gupta proclaimed. “Because it’s overwhelming. It’s psychologically depressing, it’s discouraging.”

He then pushed negative incentives for the unvaccinated to nudge them into getting the jab. If that doesn’t work, he’s advising that they should be deprioritized at hospitals. In other words, ignore the unvaccinated as if you were doing life and death triage on the battlefield in favor of those they deem are more likely to survive because they have been vaccinated.

“We are going to see more movement in the private sector and I do think negative incentives whether a vaccine mandate in the workplace or this is where it’s controversial, but we need to talk about this, the bioethics of it broadly because this is not the last respiratory pandemic we’re going to face,” Gupta warned.

“What do we do with somebody who is unvaccinated who is taking advanced ICU therapies from somebody who is vaccinated in the hospital? How do we rank order that priority? We do it for organs, kidneys, livers, lungs. We say, ‘Did you smoke, did you drink recently?’ If you did, you’re lower on the list, even if you need it. We need to start thinking of that model,” he posited, proposing the unthinkable.

Gupta has gone down this dark path before. In August, he suggested to Reid that “only the fully vaccinated” should be prioritized for ICU care, and there needed to be a “rethink” about care rationing.

Under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, any hospitalized patient requiring emergency care has to be treated regardless of the circumstances.

In non-emergency situations, doctors can refuse patients as long as this is not due to their race, gender, sexuality, or religion. This potentially could lead to refusing care to the unvaccinated but it is a matter of ethics and risk and is up to the medical staff in charge.

Dr. Jonathan Moreno, who is a professor of medical ethics at the University of Pennsylvania, told Yahoo News in September, “We have to find ways to take care of people, even if we don’t agree with their actions.”

Leftists are all over social media applauding Gupta’s advice to move the unvaxxed to the back of the line at hospitals, but many consider it unethical in the extreme:
