The reverberations of Sen. Joe Manchin’s announcement on Sunday that he won’t support the Build Back Better plan are still being felt in the political establishment, but Nancy Pelosi is claiming that it’s not over until it’s over.
And she is reminding America that it’s another guy named Joe who is running the show.
In a statement, the House Speaker claimed that “While it is disappointing that we may not have a law by the end of the year, we are hopeful that we will soon reach agreement so that this vital legislation can pass as soon as possible next year.”
She described the proposed Democrat spending spree as President Joe Biden’s “spectacular vision for the future.” She also claimed that there was a “House-Senate-White House agreement on the fundamental framework of Build Back Better. ”
Speaking at the Democratic National Committee holiday celebration last week attended by Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, Pelosi gushed that the president is “just perfect.”

In remarks made at a press event on wildfire prevention and climate investments, Pelosi (D-Calif.) made it clear that she thinks Biden is “in charge” despite Manchin’s stance.
“We are very respectful of all of our Members. They all represent their districts, and that’s a good thing, but we all have a national responsibility as well. And I have confidence that Joe Manchin will understand. We will find the agreement that is there to be made,” she said. “But make no mistake, Joe Biden’s in charge.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Pelosi’s counterpart, has also vowed to bring the $2 trillion (or more) measure up for a vote next year.
On Fox News Sunday, the West Virginia Democrat, the key player (along with Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona) in the 50-50 U.S. Senate, explained that after about five months of negotiations with Pelosi, Schumer, Biden and others, he couldn’t strike a deal on the mammoth legislation, particularly with inflation already soaring to the detriment of his constituents.

This prompted Manchin’s fellow Democrats to denounce him, including White House press secretary Jen Psaki who accused the lawmaker of suddenly flip-flopping and, in so doing, breaching his commitments even though his reservations were well known to all concerned.
Manchin, 74, is up for re-election in 2024 in a state that has gone red in a big way.
Among many GOP officials, U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) is on Team Manchin.
“I think this is actually great news for the country. It was a bad bill. Everybody knows it’s a bad bill, especially where our economy is. The answer is really for Washington to start spending trillions of dollars more that it doesn’t have, we would be paying people to stay at home, we would be investing in this Green New Deal agenda – which is going to make energy costs even more expensive? And that somehow is the recipe America needs in order to ‘build back better?’ It’s a joke. It’s a bad bill,” he told Fox News about the bill that some have derisively renamed Build Back Broke.
Manchin literally wrote down what he would support in a document signed by Chuck Schumer, months ago. The bill isn’t close to what he wrote. His decision is “sudden and inexplicable” in the same way the bill would cost “zero dollars,” or whatever: It isn’t. https://t.co/0foOIdTxYm

Privately Senator Sinema has been telling people it’s not just her and Manchin who are opposed to #BuildBackBetter — many of their Democrat colleagues are opposed as well, but afraid to speak up. She tells them they’re “hiding behind her skirt.”

The New York Post editorial board praised Manchin for killing “the bloated, inflation-fueling, misguided welfare-state expansion that was the Build Back Better bill…The $5 trillion BBB bill would have been a handout to Democratic-backed unions, federalizing child-care and pre-K workers into their ranks. It was full of gifts for everyone from rich people living in Democratic states (via the state and local tax deduction) to journalists (via media subsidies).
“Besides being a colossal waste of money, its ‘climate change’ subsidies would have hurt Manchin’s state of West Virginia, where they want lumps of coal in their stockings. The legislation would have driven up the cost of everything for everyone — adding to our already historic inflation. It was nowhere close to being ‘paid for,’ as President Joe Biden claimed,” the editorial board noted.
As the Democrats’ top legislative priority has floundered, Pelosi’s insistence that Biden is in charge was met with skepticism on social media.
No modern presidency has collapsed as swiftly as Joe Biden’s.

When you have to inform everybody of whose in charge, then he really is not in charge.

He can be in charge all he wants. 51 Senators are saying no to fundamentally changing the country.
51 is a great number when the Dems need KH to break a tie but it works both ways.
