With focus on testing, Tapper presses Fauci on WH efforts amid Omicron panic: ‘We have to do better’

Dr. Anthony Fauci just barely and quite briefly admitted Sunday that the Biden administration’s handling of the coronavirus deserves the poor ratings its received.

He did so while speaking with CNN host Jake Tapper, who quite bluntly noted that the virus remains prevalent throughout the country, and even worse, the administration doesn’t appear to have much interest in testing.

“The Biden administration does seem to be falling short when it comes to testing. As these cases are spiking, many Americans are stuck in long lines, many pharmacies are sold out of the rapid at-home tests, not to mention, of course, they’re expensive,” he said.

“The White House has even mocked the idea of sending tests to every American. Is the state of testing in the United States acceptable to you?”

“Well, we got to do better,” Fauci initially replied, finally admitting a truth that the public appears to be keenly aware aware of, according to recent polling data.

As is his tendency, however, he immediately flip-flopped.

“I mean, we are doing better. If you look now compared to what we were a year ago, it’s extraordinarily much different in the positive sense. We now have multiple, multiple at-home tests available, when we virtually had none a year ago,” he said.

But what’s also true is that deaths have nearly tripled. At the start of the year, America boasted about 350,000 coronavirus deaths. As of Dec. 19th, that number was up to almost 850,000, despite the release late last year of the coronavirus vaccine.

“But we do need to do better,” Fauci then surreptitiously added.

He continued by touting the administration’s efforts toward improving testing.

“The government now, the federal government, has been investing now several billion dollars to make anywhere from 200 million to 500 million tests available per month, many of them free. There are going to be at 10,000 centers that are going to be giving out free tests,” he said.

“So we’re going to be going in the right direction. We do. And I have said that myself many times, Jake, that we really need to flood the system with testing. We need to have tests available for anyone who wants them, particularly when we’re in a situation right now where people are going to be gathering,” he added.

What he didn’t address — nor did Tapper press him on — was the criticism the administration has faced from so-called “public health experts.” While these “experts” are generally distrusted by the right, they’re supposed to be the oracles of all truth on the left.

When the Biden administration announced in October that it intended to spend $1 billion to increase the country’s supply of at-home COVID tests, these “experts” cried foul.

“(T)esting industry executives and public health experts, including former federal officials, say that the government will need to do even more on the testing front to subdue the Delta variant,” Politico reported at the time.

The “experts” also complained about the late timing.

“They really believed that they were going to declare victory over Covid and move on. And so they took their eye off the testing ball for most of this year because they thought that vaccines were going to save the day,” one “expert” said.

Yet two months later, the administration appears to be singing the same tune about “investing” in testing. The “experts” would likely say that talk is cheap.

During another part of the CNN segment featuring Fauci, Tapper asked the “doctor” about Vice President Kamala Harris’s recent admission that the administration hadn’t been prepared for the Delta and Omicron variants.

“So, Vice President Harris told ‘The L.A. Times’ this week that the administration did not anticipate the variants — quote — ‘We didn’t see Delta coming. I think most scientists did not upon whose advice and direction we have relied didn’t see Delta coming. We didn’t see Omicron coming. And that’s the nature of what this awful virus has been, which, as it turns out, has mutations and variants,'” he said.

“Obviously, nobody can anticipate the specific next variant to come, what the protein will look like, etc. But, in a more general sense, did you not see variants coming?”

Despite Harris’s rare admission of truth, Fauci tried rewriting the story.

Listen:

“We did, Jake. We definitely saw variants coming,” he said.

He claimed that what Harris was really referring to was “the extent of the mutations and the amino acid substitutions in Omicron, which is really unprecedented.”

“It kind of came out of nowhere, where you have a virus that has 50 mutations, 30 of which are in the spike protein, and 10 or 12 of which are in the receptor binding domain,” he continued.

“I mean, to me, that’s really quite unprecedented. So that’s something you would not have anticipated. But we certainly were anticipating that there were going to be variants, because when you have so many viruses — so much replication going on in the community, if you give a virus enough opportunity to replicate, you know it’s going to ultimately mutate.”

During another Sunday morning interview, this one on MSNBC, Fauci claimed that Omicron variant is “raging through the world” and that the only way to stay safe from it is by getting boosted.

Apparently, the vaccine itself is ineffective against this new variant — or at least that’s how Fauci made it sound.
