Seattle residents who may have believed that the socialist wave that has consumed city government would be rolled back got a lump of coal dropped in their Christmas stockings when an openly Marxist member of the City Council narrowly survived a recall election.

On Friday, King County Elections officially certified the results that allowed Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant to retain her position where she will inflict more damage on what was once one of America’s most pristine cities but, like so many other areas under Democrat control, has degenerated into a dystopian hellscape with conditions reminiscent of a third world country.

The margin of victory in the December 7 election was a mere 310 votes with “about 53.5% of eligible voters” submitting ballots, according to the Seattle Times. The votes were “split nearly down the middle, with votes against the recall securing 50.4% and votes in favor trailing with 49.6%.” Around 41,500 residents in District 3 voted in an election that many viewed as a referendum on the Emerald City’s capture by socialists.

A fire-breathing radical economics professor, Sawant has vowed to replace capitalism with socialism and has railed against big business, especially online retail colossus Amazon which is a dominant presence in the Seattle area where the corporation is headquartered, earning her the ire of many for her demagoguery which has energized local socialists and other far-left activists.

The recall was spurred by several charges against Sawant including that she allegedly allowed unruly activists to invade City Hall last summer when violence consumed the city following the unfortunate death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police in violation of Seattle’s pandemic restrictions.

She was also accused of leading a mob that descended on the home of Mayor Jenny Durkan, a blatant act of political intimidation and only one that became commonplace as emboldened gangs of leftists and anarchists realized that they were free to act out and would face no consequences for their actions.

Following the advance on her home, Durkan condemned Sawant in a statement: “All of us have joined hundreds of demonstrations across the City, but Councilmember Sawant and her followers chose to do so with reckless disregard of the safety of my family and children. In addition, during or after Councilmember Sawant’s speech at that rally, her followers vandalized my home by spray-painting obscenities,”

Sawant was also an outspoken advocate of the miscreants who took over several city blocks where they set up an “autonomous” zone known as both the CHAZ (Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone) and the CHOP (Capitol Hill Organized Protest) during a period that Durkan naively referred to as the “summer of love,” despite rampant lawlessness including a murder that Sawant blamed on Trump supporters.

Last year, the India-born Sawant uncorked an unhinged rant against Amazon and CEO Jeff Bezos, vowing that “we are coming for you and your rotten system, we are coming to dismantle this deeply oppressive, racist, sexist, violent, utterly bankrupt system of capitalism, this police state.”

In an effort to put a positive spin on the failed recall, the group that sought to remove Sawant issued a statement.

“The Recall Sawant campaign set out 18 months ago to restore accountability in the District 3 City Council seat – and we succeeded in that. Our movement showed that Seattle citizens will hold elected officials accountable to the voters for irresponsible and illegal acts,” said Henry Bridger II of Recall Sawant.

Like in so many other cities that have succumbed to leftist fervor, there is no relief in sight for Seattle residents who may be doomed to suffer with little alternative other than to relocate.
