Kyrie Irving, star player of the Brooklyn Nets, was sidelined this year because he refused to comply with New York City’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, but oh, how the tables have turned.
As more Nets players drop due to breakthrough cases (meaning fully-vaccinated players catching coronavirus) and injuries, the team’s management made the decision to allow Irving to play, so long as the game takes place outside of New York.
ESPN Sources: With the unfolding circumstances of Brooklyn’s season – including injuries, Covid losses and an inordinate minutes load on their superstar players – the Nets are bringing back All-Star guard Kyrie Irving as a part-time player for games outside of New York.

It appears they have reconsidered their stance after it looked like their season was in jeopardy, implying that it was never about the vaccine in the first place. They simply wanted Irving to comply in order to be able to play the game.
So far, Irving has been unwilling satisfy New York City mandates and become vaccinated to play home games, but the turbulence of the ongoing NBA season has caused the organization to reconsider their preseason decision to fully sideline Irving, sources said. https://t.co/OdfJT6Kd26

Regardless of the motivations behind letting Irving back on the court, he is just happy to be able to play.
Nets owner Joe Tsai, GM Sean Marks, Coach Steve Nash and key players were fully supportive of the idea — and Irving has been eager to return to play in the team’s away games. He can start practicing at team facility.

However, he won’t be jumping back into the game just like that. As he’s been out for quite some time, he will likely need time to train and get back into peak form.

Twitter users on both sides of the vaccine mandate debate had a lot to say:
Ok so let me understand this, to help deal with too many vaccinated players being out with Covid, they decide to bring in an UNVACCINATED PLAYER???? He’s gonna play one game then be out right on the H&S protocols with the rest of them this is incredibly dumb

This is brilliant….we now get a case study….if Kyrie plays and constantly test negative or no symptoms if positive, then we can deduce that he was right all along. pic.twitter.com/iF7dYY9Dw5

Imagine seeing the entire nba vaccinated and everyone testing positive and still believing it’s just unvaccinated

Aren’t 99% of the players in the NBA vaccinated? And they are STILL having issues with COVID? Maybe Kyrie Irving isn’t the problem? 🤔
