CNN host Anderson Cooper appeared on “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert Friday and let it slip who was waiting in the wings to scoop up former host Chris Cuomo’s slot once he was fired from the network for numerous scandals and a shocking lack of journalistic ethics.
Stunningly, Cooper claims he did not know that Cuomo had been terminated until it was reported on television.
Following that revelation, Cooper evidently got a call from talk show host Andy Cohen who co-anchors CNN’s annual New Year’s Eve broadcasts with him.
“The first call I got after I got the call about Chris Cuomo was Andy Cohen, like ‘Do you think I could get that show?'” Cooper recounted Cohen asking him about the opening left in the wake of Cuomo’s departure.
“I was like, ‘Andy, you’ve got enough real estate in television,’” Cooper told Cohen. Cohen hosts “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” on the Bravo network and he also serves as executive producer of the “Real Housewives” shows.
Cooper quipped that the talk show host “feels he is fully qualified to host a presidential debate because he hosts the ‘Housewives’ reunion.”
Colbert replied, “I 100 percent agree.”
Cooper and Cohen have been friends for years, allegedly ever since the two were originally set up on a blind date, according to the Daily Mail.
They never wound up going out because Cohen broke Cooper’s “cardinal rule” during a phone call setting up their date. Cohen reportedly asked him a question about his famous mother Gloria Vanderbilt and that was the end of that.
So far, CNN has filled the spot with political commentator Michael Smerconish. But there are rumors swirling that CNN host Jake Tapper may eventually take the slot.
“He is the logical choice, but if he takes over, it will have a cascading effect because Jake’s unlikely to be able to continue State of the Union and remain lead DC anchor and Chief Washington Correspondent. In short, this really has screwed with CNN’s programming line-up. The only saving grace is that it is the end of the year and network bosses can position 2022 as a revamped line-up,” a source told Radar.
CNN is scrambling to find Chris Cuomo's replacement after his recent firing, w/Jake Tapper allegedly named as the top candidate to take over the former host's primetime slot.
“It’s Jake by a long stretch,” a network insider told Radar. “Jake has been on the rise for a long time."— Michele🎄🤶☃️🆘SAVE A LIFE👉GET VAXED💉😷🆘🎄 (@RadarResist) December 10, 2021
“Reliable Sources” host Brian Stelter is laughably also said to be in the running.
Cooper told Colbert that he felt terrible about the development and was sorry for Cuomo. He claimed the network had to adhere to strict journalistic ethics… a statement many across the nation would find laughable.
“Look, any time … I don’t want anything bad to happen to somebody who’s a colleague and somebody who is a friend of mine, and I feel terrible for him and his family,’ Cooper remarked. “That being said, look, journalists have strict ethics and strict rules that we are to abide by and if you don’t abide by them, there are repercussions. And I wish Chris the best, and I’m sorry for how all of this played out. … It’s a business with very big responsibilities and there are repercussions.”
Chris Cuomo was fired on Dec. 4 following texts surfacing that bolstered allegations “about his involvement with his brother’s defense.” Another sexual harassment allegation sealed his fate and CNN booted their number one host.
