Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” took its usual jabs at some of the top news stories for the past week, and typically went light on Democrats and liberals while saving the sharpest barbs for former President Donald Trump and Republicans.

“On Thursday, a Chicago jury declared Jussie Smollett really bad at acting,” co-host Colin Jost began. “Smollett was found guilty of charges related to staging a hate crime. It’s the worst staged hate crime since my all-Christian production of Fiddler on the Roof.”

After that light touch and anti-Christian slam, Jost quickly pivoted to a favorite SNL target: Trump.

“And in legal news where someone definitely won’t get convicted, Donald Trump is being investigated for fraud by New York attorney general Letitia James,” Jost continued.

“James wants to depose Trump under oath on January 7th. Come on, January 7th? That’s the day after his big anniversary,” he quipped as a photo of the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol Building flashed.

Co-host Michael Che was up next: He mentioned a report last week that Vice President Kamala Harris is often unprepared for meetings because she does not dig into briefing materials.

“Wow, you know, it feels really amazing to finally see someone in the White House who is just like me,” Che quipped.

Che then quickly moved on to the Fox News Christmas tree fire, which the NYPD believes was set by a homeless man, and quoted host Ainsley Earhardt’s reaction: “This scrooge is not gonna get away with it!”

“Nothing has ever explained Fox News better than a rich white lady calling a homeless man scrooge,” Che joked.

That said, CNN was not spared some ridicule, though again, it was noticeably much tamer than the Fox News jab.

The co-hosts mentioned that the network, which is still suffering fallout after host Chris Cuomo was fired amid a new allegation of sexual misconduct as the network was investigating his full involvement in helping his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, fend off sexual harassment allegations of his own.

“After CNN fired Chris Cuomo, it was revealed that the former anchor has been accused of sexual misconduct just like his older brother,” said Che. “’Well, those two are quite a pair,’ said Cuomo to a female coworker.”

Some other anti-Trump, anti-conservative jabs included:

Che: “Trump adviser Roger Stone, who draws his glasses on with a Sharpie, refused to cooperate with the committee investigating the Jan. 6 attacks, though Stone said he would be open to sitting in a corner watching the committee take turns on his wife.”

Jost: “Russia has deployed 90,000 troops to its border with Ukraine leading many to believe that Vladimir Putin intends to invade the country. And, no offense to Ukraine, but…why? Is Russia running low on tracksuits and counterfeit cologne?” He added: “At the same time, it’s tough for America to criticize countries who take land from their neighbors…I mean, it’s not exactly a secret where we got New Mexico.”

The pair also took aim at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over the omicron variant of COVID-19, though again, the treatment was light.

“The CDC believes the omicron variant was first appearing in the U.S. during a recent anime convention in New York. Damn…the one time they leave the house,” quipped Che.

Jost followed that up with this gag: “New York City will require all children over the age of five to show proof of vaccination before dining indoors or going to an entertainment venue. Because if there’s one thing a five-year-old can do, it’s keep track of a small piece of paper.”

The two also went on to savage Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) who announced last week he will be stepping down from Congress to take a top position in Trump’s new media conglomerate.
