Many astute observers have recognized that the modern incarnation of the Democratic Party has become increasingly obsessed with race, at least partially out of a necessity to craft its appeal to certain demographic groups in order to accrue political power, but it took one of their own to finally call them out on it.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson fired off a provocative series of tweets following the announcement by Matthew Dowd that he was dropping out of the race to be lieutenant governor of Texas in next year’s election, citing the quest for “greater diversity” as a reason for his decision, pulling back the curtain on what he called the “800 lb gorilla in the room” of his party’s blatant racism.

Dowd, a former political strategist for the George W. Bush administration who like so many other D.C. insiders moved into media as an analyst for ABC News, released a statement that he was pulling the plug on his brief foray into Lone Star State politics.

He announced his campaign on September 29 and just over two months later, shocked supporters when he tweeted out his statement on Tuesday, leaning heavily on a 2018 column that he wrote making a “humble suggestion” that white male Christians should “take it upon ourselves to step back and give more people who don’t look like us access to the levers of power.”

Mayor Johnson responded to Dowd’s announcement, stirring things up with a blistering Twitter volley.

“I’m confused and a little disturbed by the reasoning here. Campaigns are precisely for the purpose of selecting the BEST candidate. It seems my friend is saying that Democratic primary voters are incapable of nominating women and minorities if there is a white man on the ballot?” Johnson wrote.

Johnson continued, “If this is in fact the case then shame on the Democratic primary voters who are incapable of voting for women and minority candidates if presented with a white male alternative. But for white male candidates to stop running as Democrats to “give us a chance” feels wrong to me.”

Then, he went there: “The problem is NOT white men running for office. The problem is the 800 lb gorilla in the room, which is the racism within the Democratic Party that many pretend doesn’t exist. So the solution isn’t folks like Dowd ‘yielding’ to candidates of color. It’s addressing the racism.”

While Dowd may have set himself up for failure with his own essay when he claimed that it was “morally right” that “we as white male Christians should do what real leadership demands and practice a level of humility which demonstrates strength by stepping back from the center of the room and begin to give up our seats at the table,” his withdrawal from the race shines a light on the degree to which the party of Jim Crow has once again devolved into a thoroughly racist entity.

Just take it from Mayor Johnson, it’s truly the “800 lb gorilla in the room,” albeit one cloaked in the lofty language of diversity.
