Fourteen looters were set free after being arrested in connection with 11 smash-and-grab robberies in Los Angeles because of California’s progressive zero-bail policy, according to Chief of Police Michel Moore.
Moore made the disturbing revelation Thursday evening during a press conference, according to FOX 11 of Los Angeles. The zero-bail policy has become popular in New York and California and is heavily pushed by leftist Democrats in the name of social justice.
“All the suspects taken into custody are out of custody, either as a result of one juvenile, or the others as a result of bailing out or zero-bail criteria,” Moore charged.
Liberal Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon is a strong proponent of ending cash bail for many crimes. He asserts that offenders will be held accountable, according to the Associated Press. Many residents frankly don’t believe him.
“Our office has been collaborating with multiple law enforcement agencies and once all the evidence has been gathered, we will review the cases to determine what criminal charges should be filed,” Alex Bastian, who is the special adviser to Gascon, proclaimed in a PR statement. “These brazen acts hurt all of us: retailers, employees, and customers alike.”
“We need the help of our criminal justice system, of our judges, of our jailers,” Mayor Eric Garcetti stated. “We have opened up a lot of the city because we’re in a better place with COVID. We should be able to also open up our jails, and we should be able to have judges that put people behind those bars.”

The California Supreme Court ruled in March that judges must consider a suspect’s ability to pay when setting bail amounts. The subsequent effect of that ruling was to allow indigent defendants to go free, pending further legal action, unless they were deemed too dangerous, the Associated Press reported.
That decision by the court flew directly in the face of California voters rejecting a proposal to end the state’s cash bail system in November 2020. Following the ruling, there has been significant fallout and ramifications over the zero-bail policy in numerous cases.
San Jose and Santa Clara County officials are blaming the liberal policy for the release of two murder suspects linked to a Halloween murder.
“This is an absolute assault on the safety of San Jose residents,” Sean Pritchard, who is the president of the San Jose Police Officers Association, told Fox News.
Suspects are now routinely arrested multiple times and then released per the zero-bail policy for a multitude of crimes.
Looters hit Los Angeles high-end stores 11 times between Nov. 18 and Nov. 28. Moore stated that they stole approximately $338,000 in merchandise and caused over $40,000 in property damage. The police evidently have no idea if the robberies involved the same suspects.

The crimes are not limited to Los Angeles. They are occurring all over the state due to policies put in place by Democratic leaders.

Theft is so rampant in San Francisco that even uber-liberal District Attorney Chesa Boudin has announced felony charges against nine suspects there. The AP is reporting that prosecutors have announced a joint effort to combat organized retail theft.
The “Defund the Police” movement appears to be all but dead in the wake of the escalating robberies. California officials in Walnut Creek increased police funding by $2 million after approximately 100 thieves wearing ski masks struck a Nordstrom department store in November. They got away with an estimated $125,000 in merchandise.
Governor Gavin Newsom is feeling the heat over the lawlessness and contends that his state budget proposal next month will “significantly increase our efforts to go after these retail rings,” according to the AP.
Moore also admonished people not to buy “black market” items, Fox 11 reported.
“The chain of responsibility extends all the way to the buyer who is willing to pay a discounted rate to get a deal,” he contended, “but recognizes that the deal is coming at a cost that could be a human life.”
