Turnabout: Four Dems top McCarthy list to boot from committees if GOP flips House

Republican leaders say they will consider removing at least four Democrats from their committee assignments should the party flip the House during next year’s midterm elections, a report said on Saturday.

The moves would come in retaliation for Democrats’ removal of two Republicans — Reps. Paul Gosar of Arizona and Marjorie Taylor Greene — from their assignments over fallout from social media posts that the party found offensive.

Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has threatened to take action against left-wing lawmakers whom he said “will need the approval of a majority to keep those positions in the future.”

“None of the Democrats singled out by McCarthy as examples of who could be removed from House committees have embraced conspiracy theories or promoted violence against their political opponents the way Greene and Gosar have,” The Hill reported.

But that is false; the four Democrats being singled out are Reps. Maxine Waters, Eric Swalwell, and Adam Schiff, all of California, as well as Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, and each of them have committed similar or worse infractions.

Waters, for example, frequently advocates violence against political opponents. In 2018, she told a crowd of supporters to confront members of then-President Donald Trump’s Cabinet if they saw them in public.

“If you see anybody from [Trump’s] Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd, and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome,” she said, without reprisal from the then-GOP majority. A year earlier, she told another crowd she would “go and take out Trump tonight.”

And earlier this year, she also traveled to Minneapolis where she again urged people to “get more confrontational” if jurors did not decide to find former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murdering George Floyd — a call for potential violence that Speaker Nancy Pelosi, another California Democrat, defended.

Meanwhile, Omar has made a series of anti-Semitic remarks since first being elected to Congress in 2018, the most recent of which were even discounted by some fellow Democrats.

As for Schiff and Swalwell, both have embraced and still push the conspiracy that Trump “colluded” with Russia to steal the 2016 election — a false claim that has been disproven by a number of congressional investigations as well as an outside probe by former special counsel Robert Mueller.

If the GOP flips the House next year, McCarthy has promised to put Gosar and Greene back on their congressional committees.

The Hill claimed that Democrats have only followed “a precedent of taking punitive action against lawmakers who promoted political violence” when Republican leaders failed to formally rebuke their own members.

“Let me be clear: If a Democrat did the same thing, I would introduce the same resolution,” said Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), who led the first resolution to censure Gosar for posting an anime video that depicted him killing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and swinging swords at President Biden.

But in reality, Democratic leaders have failed to do the same as in the case of Waters. Her call for confrontation — some say violence — against Trump and his Cabinet came roughly a year after Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the GOP minority whip, was shot and nearly killed by a far-left supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) while he and other Republicans were at softball practice one June 2017 morning.

Earlier this year, Republicans sought to censure her over her comments in Minneapolis that even the judge in the case had problems with, but Democrats refused to support it.
