Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) accused Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) of delivering an “anti-Muslim” story in a viral video that shows her telling a “Jihad Squad” joke to her supporters during a campaign stop in Colorado.

“Fact, this buffoon looks down when she sees me at the Capitol, this whole story is made up,” Omar tweeted on Thanksgiving evening with a video of Boebert. “Sad she thinks bigotry gets her clout.”

“Anti-Muslim bigotry isn’t funny & shouldn’t be normalized,” she asserted. “Congress can’t be a place where hateful and dangerous Muslims tropes get no condemnation.”

Ironically, Omar has been caught bandying about anti-Semitic tropes for years. Boebert’s joke may have been ill-considered but it was apparently not told as a factual story.

“So the other night on the House floor was not my first jihad squad moment. So I was getting into an elevator with one of my staffers. And he and I are – we’re leaving the Capitol. We’re going back to my office and we get in the elevator, and I see a Capitol Police officer running hurriedly to the elevator,” Boebart says in the video.

“I see fret all over his face, and he’s reaching… The door’s shutting, like I can’t – I can’t open it – like, what’s happening? I look to my left, and there she is. Ilhan Omar. I said, ‘Well she doesn’t have a backpack, we should be fine,’” she kidded as her audience laughed.

“We only had one floor to go,” Boebert continued. “I said, ‘Oh look, the Jihad Squad decided to show up for work today.’”

“Don’t worry, it’s just her staffers on Twitter that talk for her. She’s not tough in person. So … there’s a little bit of interactions with these folks,” Boebert added.

**Update: Boebert issued a statement on Friday afternoon apologizing to the Muslim community for her contentious remarks.

“I apologize to anyone in the Muslim community I offended with my comment about Rep. Omar,” Boebert said in a statement that was shared with Fox News Digital. “I have reached out to her office to speak with her directly. There are plenty of policy differences to focus on without this unnecessary distraction.”

And a “distraction” it was as critics including Omar latched on to the video and pummeled Boebert for it, demanding that she be removed from her committee assignments.

“These pathetic racist lies will not only endanger the life of @IlhanMN, but will increase hate crimes towards Muslims,” angrily tweeted Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI). “The continued silence & inaction towards this hate-filled colleague and others is enabling violence. It must stop.”

“Shameful, deeply offensive & dangerous,” Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) wrote. “Yet another blatant display of Islamophobia targeting @IlhanMN. These comments are personally hurtful, legitimately endanger her & the broader Muslim community. Rhetoric like this must be denounced & anyone spewing it held to account.”

“Capitol Hill is a toxic work environment for Muslim members and staff when bigots routinely spew racist, Islamophobic vitriol unchecked and with no consequence,” Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) stated. “Congresswoman @IlhanMN, we love you, and we pray for your well-being and protection from this despicable abuse.”

CNN anchor Jake Tapper also lashed out at Boebert calling her remarks “pure anti-Muslim bigotry.”

“This is pure anti-Muslim bigotry and as such is completely contrary to what the USA is supposed to stand for. That this is tolerated in American politics and the House GOP is an indictment against anyone who is silent about it,” he tweeted on Thursday.

This is yet another episode in an ongoing war of words between Omar and Boebert.

Earlier in November, the conservative firebrand came to the defense of Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) as he was being censured by Democrats for tweeting an anime video that showed him slaying socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

Boebert proceeded to go after Omar and the “Jihad Squad,” as well as Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) for having an affair with a Chinese spy.

“The Jihad Squad member from Minnesota has paid her husband, and not her brother husband, the other one, over a million dollars in campaign funds,” Boebert stated. “This member is allowed on the Foreign Affairs Committee while praising terrorists.”

“Luckily my dad raised me right, otherwise I might have gone to the floor to talk about this insurrectionist who sleeps with a pervert. I am grateful I was raised to be a decent human and not a deprived person who shamefully defecates & defiles the House of Representatives,” Omar viciously tweeted in response.
