ABC News journalist Jonathan Karl is asserting in his new book, “Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show,” that so-called “rock-solid” sources claim former Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed a plan to oust then-President Trump from office following the Jan. 6 protest.
He is contending that Mnuchin called Pompeo on the evening of Jan. 6 to discuss using the 25th Amendment to remove Trump, according to the liberal media outlet Rolling Stone.
The amendment, which was added to the Constitution following the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, provides for the removal of an incapacitated president, potentially on the grounds of mental and/or physical fitness. It has never been used.
“I learned that Mnuchin had several conversations about the 25th Amendment and, further, that Mike Pompeo actually asked for a legal analysis of the 25th Amendment and how it would work,” Karl claimed during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Monday.

Karl also stated that “while the discussions did happen, the idea that Trump’s cabinet would vote to remove him was, in fact, ludicrous.”
He noted that the idea was “quickly jettisoned” the following day after then-Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Transportation Secretary Elaine resigned. He claimed that Mnuchin realized it would take too long to use the 25th Amendment to remove Trump and would wind up in court and therefore he did not pursue the matter.
“It would not be quick enough and it would be subject to legal challenges,” Karl remarked. “But in the hours after the riot, there were high-level conversations about this.” Conversations that Karl quoted from unverified anonymous sources.
“The general plan now is to let the clock run out,” said one unnamed former senior administration official allegedly privy to high-level discussions at the time, according to CNBC. “There will be a reckoning for this President, but it doesn’t need to happen in the next 13 days.”
Karl also stated that there is no evidence that former Vice-President Mike Pence was involved in 25th Amendment discussions.
On Jan. 7, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer formally asked Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment. After five days, Pence refused.
Pompeo issued a statement via a spokesperson denying he was ever involved in any 25th Amendment conversations. He claims it just didn’t happen.
Mnuchin, who was traveling overseas at the time, declined to comment. A State Department official denied the conversations ever took place.
Karl claims he tried to get both Mnuchin and Pompeo to speak with him even if it was just to deny his allegations. Understandably, they repeatedly declined. The liberal journalist seems to have interpreted their silence as an admission of guilt, which it is not.
Shortly after Karl’s final interview, he told Rolling Stone that Pompeo’s spokesperson sent a statement denying the discussion claimed in the book ever happened.
Pompeo is rumored to be considering a run at the presidency in 2024. That is highly unlikely as the nomination at this point is reportedly Trump’s for the taking.
Karl’s book is set to come out on Tuesday. It is one of many anti-Trump books from the left that just can’t stop themselves from ongoing attacks against the former president.
