After flying to Scotland (presumably in a private jet) for the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was confronted over her decision to greenlight the boosting of the Pentagon’s already bloated budget.

Her soft response, which centered on the idea that the Pentagon is aware of the problem and working quietly to ameliorate it, provoked stern backlash from the left.

Meanwhile, Abby Martin of The Empire Files, the left-wing activist and supposed “journalist” who confronted the speaker, is now being heralded as a hero.

“Speaker Pelosi, you just presided over a large increase in the Pentagon budget. This Pentagon budget is already massive. The Pentagon is a larger polluter than 140 countries combined,” Martin said to Pelosi during a summit event Tuesday.

“How can we seriously talk about net-zero [carbon] if there is this bipartisan consensus to constantly expand this large contributor to climate change which is exempt from these conferences? [The] military is exempt from climate talks,” she then asked.

Pelosi initially passed the microphone to Democrat New Jersey Rep. Frank Pallone, who pushed back by claiming he doesn’t “see … increasing the defense budget as being something that’s inconsistent with climate action.”

He added that the Pentagon “is very much aware of the fact that they have to play a major role, both from a strategic as well as for the good of the world.”

Jumping in, the speaker then tacitly endorsed Martin’s claim that the military is the world’s greatest polluter but reiterated Pallone’s argument that the Pentagon is working on it.

“Recognizing what you said, we recognize that as well, and a big user of fuel, there have been many initiatives over time more successful with more technology to convert from fossil fuel to other sources of fuel to run the military because it would make the biggest difference,” she said.

“Transportation, defense, these are two of the biggest, can make the biggest difference in all of that. And that is something we’re very, very focused on. As I say, the Defense Department sees this systemically that we have to stop it as a national security issue. And one way to do that is to stop our dependence on fossil fuels, which exacerbate the climate crisis,” Pelosi added.

This response — admitting that there’s a problem but claiming the military (which is the one exacerbating the problem) is working on it — did not fare well with the left.

“Abby reasonably explains how the inflated war budget is destroying the planet and all we get is word salad from the Crypt Keeper,” one critic wrote.

Ouch …

Look:

What it seems they want is for the military to not even exist. As radical as Pelosi tends to be, she at least appears to recognize that a strong military is crucial to a functioning democracy, particularly one in a world inhabited by the likes of China.

But because the Democrat Party has become so beholden to “progressive” radicals, it seems the speaker can’t just say this outright. She has to try to weave a fancy narrative that defends the Pentagon but still “recognizes” the argument of the base.

Sadly for Pelosi, however, her narrative-weaving clearly failed this time around, in part because these far-left activists are convinced beyond repair that climate change is an “existential crisis” that threatens to destroy all humanity in 12 years or less.

Many contend that this is not remotely true, of course, but once you go fact-free, there’s no going back …
