‘Trial should be over’: In stunning turn of events, attacker admits Rittenhouse didn’t shoot until he pointed gun at him

In a dramatic moment in the Kyle Rittenhouse murder trial, the third man shot by the defendant, Gaige Grosskreutz, said one word that may inflict a severe, even irrecoverable blow to the prosecution’s case: “Correct.”

The response came while Grosskreutz was testifying, when Rittenhouse’s lawyers, Corey Chirafisi, asked during cross-examination a key question about the order of events in the confrontation that led to Rittenhouse opening fire on him.

“It wasn’t until you pointed your gun at him, advanced on him, with your gun pointed down at him, that he fired, right?”Chirafisi asked.

Grosskreutz calmly answered,  “Correct.”

The answer sparked an immediate sensation on Twitter, as defenders of Rittenhouse declared that the trial was effectively over, and that Rittenhouse’s case for reasonable self-defense had now been confirmed — by a hostile witness that had been shot by Rittenhouse.

As seen below, it was recommended that the defense should go direct to the verdict:

Grosskreutz is one of three men shot by Rittenhouse in the fateful and fatal shooting during the night of August 25th, 2020, in Kenosha Wisconsin. The other two men, Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, and Anthony Huber, 26, were killed in the incident, while Grosskreutz, 27, received an injury that tore away much of his right bicep.

During the trial, the prosecution has tried to paint Rittenhouse as the instigator, a violent youth looking for trouble. The fact that Rittenhouse, then 17, traveled to Kenosha specifically for the protests from his home in Antioch, Illinois had assisted their case, and the fact that Rittenhouse lived while two men were dead didn’t help with his image in the press.

The defense has made much of the witness testimony regarding the “hyperaggressive” behavior by Rosenbaum, stating that was “acting belligerently.” Witnesses even said Rosenbaum had threatened to kill Rittenhouse at one point, and had chased Rittenhouse and lunged for his rifle,  ABC News reported. Video footage of Huber attacking Rittenhouse with a skateboard has also helped the defense frame it as a case of self-defense.

With Grosskreutz confirming he had advanced on Rittenhouse before Rittenhouse open fire, this potentially blows open the entire case against him, by allowing the defense to pin each shooting as being in response to provocative and violent actions that would place Rittenhouse in reasonable fear for his safety.

As the only surviving gunshot victim, Grosskreutz’s testimony is important, and the defense has been quick to try to discredit him during cross-examination. Chirafisi had also tried to cast doubt on Grosskreutz’s testimony by questioning if there was a financial incentive to say whatever was needed to help convict Rittenhouse, due to Grosskreutz’s own lawsuit against the city of Kenosha for “allowing” the violence to happen and giving armed groups the run of the streets.

“If Mr. Rittenhouse is convicted, your chance of getting 10 million bucks is better, right?” the attorney asked.

While declaring the trial over is probably just a bit premature, there can be little doubt that this one-word answer was a godsend to the defense.

Here’s a quick sampling of immediate responses to the dramatic moment:
