Former Bronx bartender AOC takes on legendary Dem political strategist over ‘wokeness,’ Virginia loss

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ripped into James Carville, one of the Democratic Party’s most legendary strategists, after he blamed Virginia election losses on the “stupid wokeness” of progressives like her, noting that the term is more fashionable among “older people.”

“Like the average audience for people seriously using the word ’woke’ in a 2021 political discussion are James Carville and Fox News pundits so that should tell you all you need to know,” the self-described Democratic socialist congresswoman from New York noted on Twitter.

“AOC,” as she is popularly known, also blamed Carville — who successfully ran Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign — for trying to divide Democrats using terms like “woke.”

”And before people disingenuously complain ‘woke’ is denigrating to older people, it’s actually pundits like Carville using terms like ‘woke’ to insult voters under 45 that’s denigrating,” Ocasio-Cortez also tweeted.

“Don’t wonder why youth turnout falls when Dems talk about them like this. We need everyone,” she added.

Known colloquially as the “Ragin’ Cajun,” Carville was asked during an interview with “PBS NewsHour” to comment on GOP Gov.-elect Glenn Youngkin’s victory over Democratic challenger and former Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe in a state that President Biden won just a year ago by 10 points.

“Well, what went wrong is this stupid wokeness,” Carville said.

“Don’t just look at Virginia and New Jersey,” he continued, citing a much tighter than expected context in the Garden State between incumbent Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy and his GOP opponent and former state Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, who still has yet to concede.

“Look at Long Island, look at Buffalo, look at Minneapolis. Even look at Seattle, Wash. I mean, this ‘Defund the police’ lunacy, this ‘Take Abraham Lincoln’s name off of schools,’ that — people see that,” Carville noted further, going on to suggest that progressives check into a “woke detox center.”

Ocasio-Cortez also blasted ABC13 News for reportedly misquoting her remarks about McAuliffe.

“How can news outlets even attribute words to me I didn’t say? I said there are limits to trying to mobilize a campaign with a 100% moderate strategy without mobilizing the base. Said nothing abt ’wokeness’ which is a term almost exclusively used by older people these days btw,” she wrote on Twitter.

In an editor’s note to the story, the station added, “The term ‘woke’ was put in single-quotes in the original headline to this story to point out a colloquialism, not an exact quote.”

Several social media users took Ocasio-Cortez to task over her criticisms of Carville and others.
