In an apparent moment of uncharacteristic honesty, NBC’s Brian Williams came clean about the media’s disconnect with the population at large, trapped in an insulated bubble.
Williams, who has migrated to MSNBC and hosts a late-night show named the “11th Hour,” suddenly felt a moment of candor on Friday. Williams began his sudden moment of clarity about the media by saying“I have always believed we should be more critical of ourselves.” He then launched into his monologue in earnest.
“The press corps — the people we read and the people we see all day long on cable news — tend to live in blue dots. No fault of their own — it’s where their employers are located. But it helps explain why the press corps largely was shocked at the rise of the Tea Party, shocked at the election of Donald Trump,” he said.
“Out beyond the last exit for a Whole Foods, people have been listening to Steve Bannon and Trumpers have been running for town and city council and boards of ed, and this is happening in town after town across what is still a very red country,” he continued.
Williams’ guest, Baratunde Thurston, then awkwardly began musing on Republican voters voting the way they do because they feel fear on racial issues, given the lack of an actual question or statement directed at him by Williams.
The statements come as a bit of a surprise, given Williams’ contentious relationship with the truth. Williams notoriety when he fabricated a story about being fired upon as a war correspondent in Iraq, including fictitious rocket fire upon him and even a grenade hitting a helicopter he was in. He then tried to perpetuate the lie until finally, the avalanche of evidence to the contrary became too overwhelming for even him to ignore, and he was forced to confess he made it all up. This bit of false courage under fire cost him his job at “NBC Nightly News” in 2015, and he had to issue a humiliating apology:
“After a ground fire incident in the desert during the Iraq war invasion, I made a mistake in recalling the events of 12 years ago. It did not take long to hear from some brave men and women in the air crews who were also in that desert. I want to apologize. I said I was traveling in an aircraft that was hit by [rocket-propelled grenade] fire. I was instead in a following aircraft. . . . This was a bungled attempt by me to thank one special veteran and, by extension, our brave military men and women, veterans everywhere, those who have served while I did not.”
Williams isn’t the only liberal who has noted that things may not be the way certain reporters wish they were. Donny Deutsch pointed out on “Morning Joe” with Joe Scarborough that the Democrats are at great risk of having their multi-trillion-dollar spending bills completely fail. Furthermore, Deutsch warned that despite what many Democrats in the media want to believe, President Joe Biden is already in genuine, serious danger of losing in 2024, possibly coupled with a disastrous defeat in the 2022 midterm elections.
