The left-wing politicos of New York City have decided to discard a nearly 200-year-old statue of Founding Father Thomas Jefferson, an imperfect man who accomplished great things, but keep in place a statue of deceased Minneapolis criminal suspect George Floyd, an imperfect man who accomplished nothing.

In doing so, they have inadvertently proven former President Donald Trump right (again).

After the deadly Unite the Right rally in 2017, which had been motivated in part by frustration over leftists trying to remove Confederate statues, the president defended some rallygoers by warning of a slippery slope.

“Are we going to take down statues to George Washington? How about Thomas Jefferson? What do you think of Thomas Jefferson? … Are we going to take down his statue because he was a major slave owner?” he asked at the time.

Listen:

Democrats and their media allies responded at the time by mocking the then-president, claiming that there would never come a day that America’s Founding Fathers would be targeted for cancellation. Yet four years later, America’s Founding Fathers are now being targeted for cancellation.

“For more than 100 years, a 7-foot-tall statue of Thomas Jefferson has towered over members of the New York City Council in their chamber at City Hall, a testament to his role as one of the nation’s founding fathers and the primary author of the Declaration of Independence,” The New York Times reported Monday.

“On Monday, city officials voted unanimously to remove the statue from Council chambers, but delayed a decision on where to put it,” the Times added.

Why? Because he, like many others of his time, had owned slaves, and that makes him “racist” according to modern standards.

New York State Assemblyman Charles Barron, a former city council member, called for the statue to be outright “destroyed.”

“I don’t think it should go anywhere. I don’t think it should exist. I think it should be put in storage or destroyed or whatever,” he reportedly said at Monday’s hearing.

Meanwhile, a statue of Floyd continues to sit unmolested in Union Square in Manhattan thanks to the council’s unabashed adoration for him and his supposed “legacy.”

“George Floyd’s legacy is truly monumental — and I’m not just using that as a figure of speech,” council member Farah Louis reportedly said during the statue’s unveiling in June, as reported at the time by USA Today.

Former President Trump wasn’t pleased by the council’s decision to tear down Jefferson’s statue.

“Well, it’s finally happened. The late, great Thomas Jefferson, one of our most important Founding Fathers, and a principal writer of the Constitution of the United States, is being ‘evicted’ from the magnificent New York City Council Chamber. Who would have thought this would ever be possible (I did, and called it long ago!),” he said in a statement Tuesday.

“Next up, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln and, of course, George Washington. The Radical Left has gone crazy, and it’s hurting our country badly–But someday soon, sane people will be back, and our Country will be respected again!” he added.

Instead of acknowledging that he’d been right, Democrats and their media allies predictably zeroed in on a factual error he’d made.

Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, not the U.S. Constitution.

This one mistake — versus the dozens of mistakes made by the media on any given week — has become their sole focus:

Critics like Fox News’s Brit Hume have come at this issue from a different angle.

Speaking on Fox News’ “Fox News Primetime” this Tuesday, he noted that Democrats’ campaign against America’s Founding Fathers is just part of their broad plan to denigrate and denounce the United States, despite its accomplishments.

“The truth of the matter is that what these politicians are doing, they’re exploiting really the decency, the decency of the American people, which responded to the situation in this country where racism was much too prevalent and persisted long after the slavery slaves were freed,” he said.

“And America, as a nation stood up, took notice of that and made major major changes, which have opened doors of opportunity throughout the land throughout society,” Hume added.

But rather than celebrate America’s accomplishments and focus on pushing ahead, Democrats remain obsessed with litigating the past — or, rather, the portions of the past that make it easier for them to enact their racially charged agenda.

Regarding American Indians, for instance, never do they speak about the evils committed by them, including reportedly genocide. The narrative is always one-sided, with anyone who’s a white European being maligned, and anyone who’s not being heralded as a hero.

This makes it easier for them to argue that America is a fundamentally racist nation rooted in so-called “white supremacy.” It’s a false notion but one that they, nevertheless, use to justify their rampant illiberalism (e.g., critical race theory, affirmative action, identity politics, anti-white discrimination, etc.).

As noted by Hume, accusations of racism have “become a source of power for” them.
