Donny Deutsch in a Trump-induced frenzy over potential MAGA presidency coming back

Amidst discontent with President Joe Biden, some are positing the possible return of former president Donald Trump to politics in 2024.

However, it’s not just the usual Trump fan club saying that this time. On Monday’s “Morning Joe” with host Joe Scarborough, Donny Deutsch, former MSNBC host himself, appeared as a guest and expressed great concerns over the prospects of Biden in 2024, and the potential impact of a failure with the spending bills, which are seen as a major piece of Democratic legislation and the centerpiece of Biden’s legislative agenda, the legacy of his presidency.

Two key individuals standing in the way of realizing the massive spending bills, dubbed as “human infrastructure” measures, totaling roughly $5 trillion or so, are Democratic Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ). Neither are from heavily liberal states, and both have repeatedly played spoiler to the legislation, imposing limits and requirements that clash heavily with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party that is serving as much of the push behind the bills.

Scarborough pointed out that, for all the progressive fury against the two senators, they appear to be gaining more support from people who matter, like their constituents and their donors, than they are losing favor with other Democratic colleagues.

“Senator Manchin would say he’s said the right things, and so would Kyrsten Sinema, for their constituents, on all of those things.” he said. “You have two Democrats, who are moderates, one in a state Donald Trump got 69 percent in, and one, Maricopa County, has hard red, now turning purple. Uh, they’re not moving though, we’ve seen this for well over a month. In fact, they’re not only getting support from back home over not moving, they’re gaining contributions from K street for not moving. So, it’s not like it’s hurting them politically, to be seen as the bulwark against what many of their constituents see as runaway spending.”

“K Street” refers to K Street in Washington D.C., which is known as a center for multiple lobbying and advocacy groups. Scarborough followed up his monologue with a quote by E.J. Dionne Jr. from an op-ed in The Washington Post on Sunday:

“The late Donald Rumsfeld might advise Democrats: you have to work with the system you have, not the system you wish you had. It is no excuse for making a mess of what should be a moment of achievement.”

From there, Deutsch launched into his own monologue, complaining about how poorly the Democrats have handled the bills, which run a real risk of failure.

“First, stepping back a little bit, they sold this bill from the beginning very wrongly. You don’t call a bill a $3.5 trillion bill because that does not mean anything. I would have called it the Children’s First Bill. About 80 percent of it, whether it’s climate, childcare, tax credit, healthcare, comes back to helping children. So, first of all, the thing has been packaged wrong to begin with,” he said.

The real danger, though, according to Deutsch, is Democrats’ unwillingness to compromise with the middle, which he worried was running a very serious risk of a Biden defeat in 2024, and potentially even bringing back the Democratic antichrist, Trump.

“Second of all, you have to make the deal. Here is what’s at stake here. People have got to understand what we are staring, what we begun to stare at with the potential Donald Trump presidency coming back. If the Democrats do not walk away with the victory here — and you can package this as a victory here, there’s no question about it — they are so vulnerable. I actually believe right now, if Donald Trump ran against Joe Biden, Donald Trump would win. And even if he wouldn’t win legally, we see what’s happening in the state legislatures.”

Deutsch finished with a word of warning to other Democrats about losing touch with the American mainstream:

“We are on the precipice and this is not the time for Democrats to be lurching left. This is the time for them to grow up, put their big boy and girl panties on, and understand what is at stake here and get this deal done.”
