YouTube yanks conservative American group account with no warning, reinstates after backlash

After deleting the conservative American Principles Project’s 8-year account with no warning on Monday, YouTube reinstated it temporarily after massive backlash but has removed a number of videos claiming they are in violation of their online policies.

“At 6:30 am, American Principles Project received an email from YouTube notifying us that our page was shut down. They failed to give us any reason why whatsoever. Just that we had either ‘severe or repeated violations’ of their community guidelines,” president Terry Schilling told the Daily Caller.

Ivy Choi, who is a YouTube spokesperson, told MRC Free Speech America, “We enforce our Terms of Service equally for everyone, and terminated the American Principles Project (APP) channel for reuploading content from a previously terminated channel. Upon review of their appeal, we have reinstated the APP channel and issued a warning to the channel, in accordance with our three-strikes system. We’re working with APP to explain our policies so they can make the best decisions for their channel moving forward.”

The social media giant cited reuploads of former White House adviser Steve Bannon’s War Room on the APP channel as the reason for their suspension. Bannon’s YouTube channel was banned without any explanation in January.

Schilling contends that the ban was due to a video shared in July promoting its “Big Family” project, which focuses on traditional values. “Hey looks like @Google shutdown @approject’s @YouTube page over this video,” Shilling tweeted. “Pretty obnoxious [to be honest]. No warning, no explanation, nothing. These people are evil.”

The video blasted anti-American propaganda in schools and porn online. It showed a “dad” throwing away The 1619 Project and condemning boys being allowed to compete in girls’ sports. American Principles Project Director of Policy Jon Schweppe wrote that the video “had received tens of thousands of views and was our best performing video on the channel.”

“APP is the premier political organization for families in America, having spent $6 million in the 2020 election cycle alone. This far surpasses any other pro-family group political spending by far. Is it because we believe Big Pharma and the medical community are profiting off of transgender people? Is it because we oppose critical race theory in schools? Perhaps it’s simpler than that—maybe it is because we support Big Tech reform and have opposed Google’s previous efforts to censor conservatives? This is unacceptable and APP will be considering and pursuing all legal options available to us,” Schilling asserted.

YouTube reinstated the account later on Monday after angering a number of leading Republicans.

“Google is abusing its monopolistic market share to ban a mainstream pro-family group from posting videos,” Sen. Tom Cotton(R-AR) tweeted Tuesday. “Just one more reason why Congress needs to—and will—pass legislation cracking down on monopolies like @Google.”

“Google purchased YouTube to crush competition and protect their monopoly,” Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) noted. He is working alongside Cotton on legislation aimed at recognizing Google as a monopoly.

“Big Tech companies are censoring anyone for any reason. The @approject was kicked off YouTube without notice. If you’re a conservative voice, you could be next. These are no longer free-speech platforms,” Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) stated on Twitter.

A number of prominent conservatives have been banned by YouTube this year. The platform not only nixed Bannon, but Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) received a seven-day ban in August because he spoke out against masks and, in September, they banned a channel belonging to his father, Ron Paul.
