The New York Times is hardly covering itself in glory after publishing an opinion article in which seven artists provided their versions of a redesigned American flag.
The so-called newspaper of record is being widely ridiculed on social media for the revised Old Glory artwork that is part of its “Snap Out of it, America!” series.
Describing the flag as a “potent piece of national iconography,” the Times provided some additional context about the refurbished banners: “Some are functional, others artistic renderings; some represent America as it could be, others how the artist sees the country now.”
The paper also claims that the flag’s “design shifted frequently until the early 1900s.”
One of the designs contains a series of stripes and rectangles in vibrant colors, which includes yellow for “repairing systematic racism” and green for “taking care of our planet.” A separate design appears to be an overlay of an out-of-focus pink hue. “In this flag, the familiar symbolism falls out of focus, giving way to something ambiguous, vague and difficult to define,” the designer explained.
Another theoretical redesign is solid gray with white stars. “The gray, monochrome flag represents America surrendering to its fall from power and loss of the ideals it once stood for. The American dream is being washed away,” the artist noted.
A further creation, called “Life Every Voice and Sing,” seems to a kaleidoscope of different flag elements such as “Black Lives Matter,” “Don’t tread on me,” “In God We Trust,” and “Keep America Great.”
In general, the New York Times as an institution perhaps is less than enamored with the American flag, at least as it currently exists.
On July 3, the eve of Independence Day, for example, a reporter for the legacy news organization suggested that the flag was a form of disunity, placing the blame on ex-President Donald Trump and his supporters.

The month previous, a Times editorial writer went on MSNBC and admitted that she was really disturbed by all the American flags on display while visiting Long Island around Memorial Day weekend.
Apart from leftists who seem to favor dismantling various American traditions, others on Twitter are implying that the Times itself should snap out it, and that it may be appropriate to revoke any artistic license involved. Here is a sampling:
Congratulations to the @nytimes for writing the stupidest op-ed (if writing is the right word for this) of all time. (And this is quite a feat considering the vast landscape of stupidity coming from the @nytopinion page.) Bravo! You’ve outdone yourselves. https://t.co/xqKknMGtV7

It’s late September. Pretty sure the NYTimes Summer Intern who had to turn this in before heading back to school did all these designs in Powerpoint in one night, then nobody checked the slideshow before loading it up to the web.

Another cockamamie idea from people who smoke unusual things.

If the democrats redesign it it would be a Taliban flag

These may be some of the most idiotic ideas for a flag I’ve ever seen. The flag is fine as is

Some things are better off left as is. The flag is one of them.

Not really. We added states over time (and stars as a result) but it has looked largely the same (blue field of stars with 13 stripes)

@DougJBalloon I was a lifelong liberal democrat. Then NYT did a thought experiment to redesign the American Flag.
