DeSantis calls on US to rethink Australia alliance: Are they ‘freer than communist China, right now?’

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) is suggesting that the U.S. should reassess its diplomatic ties with Australia given the heavy-handed way that country is enforcing its COVID-19 lockdown.

“Something has gone dramatically off the rails,” the Florida Republican told attendees at an industry convention in Tampa on Tuesday, thereby making it difficult to distinguish “free” Australia from CCP-controlled China.

Disturbing images of police clamping down on anti-lockdown, anti-vaccine-mandate protesters primarily in Melbourne, Australia, deploying what appears to be brutal and disproportionate tactics, have been widely shared on social media in recent weeks.

“You say, like, ‘It can’t happen here,'” DeSantis sad at the International Boat Builders’ Exhibition and Conference. “You know, you guys, look what’s going on in Australia right now. You know, they’re enforcing, after a year and a half, they’re still enforcing lockdowns by the military.

“And that’s not a free country. It’s not a free country at all. In fact, I mean, I wonder why we would still have the same diplomatic relations when they’re doing that,” the governor continued in the context of the strict lockdown.

“Is Australia freer than China, communist China, right now? I don’t know. The fact that that’s even a question tells you something has gone dramatically off the rails with some of this stuff.”

To the chagrin of the corporate media, DeSantis has effectively balanced Florida’s public health needs with economic and educational considerations as well as preserving individual liberty.

DeSantis explained that “I think that what we have insisted on is that we’re not just gonna subcontract out people’s freedom and livelihoods to some health bureaucrat like Fauci, who quite frankly doesn’t care about your jobs, doesn’t care about your business, and has no regard for how his policies affect people’s everyday lives…this has really devolved away from having anything to do with health and really just more about control.”

A slightly longer version of his remarks is embedded below.

“I really believe that if we had not done what we did during the last year and a half to keep the state open, to protect people’s jobs, to protect our small businesses, to protect our kids being able to go to school — if we had not done that, a lot of these other states wouldn’t have followed. And who knows where we would be right now?,” DeSantis also told the group.

Here is just a sampling of viral videos from Australia that have made a way to Twitter:

Creators of the video embedded below juxtapose Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, during which he says that Australia “believes in a world order that favors freedom,” with scenes of the intense police response to protesters.

Writing for the Spiked website, Sky News Australia producer James Bolt opined that “We got to this point because our leaders have been chasing the goal of Zero Covid…Melbourne is not learning to live with the virus – it is learning to live with authoritarianism…People who have already been pushed beyond the brink are still suffering under draconian restrictions on every aspect of life.

“As Australians see their fellow countrymen being pepper sprayed, surrounded by shuttered businesses, they despair at the legacy that Zero Covid has left for their once-great nation,” he added.
