Though most left-wing Democrats don’t appear to truly grasp the negative consequences of “cancel culture,” Hollywood actor Johnny Depp isn’t among them.
In remarks made during a press conference at the San Sebastian Film Festival this Wednesday, Depp decried “cancel culture” and warned that anybody — including its most ardent proponents — could wind up a victim of a “cancel culture” mob.
“It can be seen as an event in history that lasted for however long it lasted, this cancel culture, this instant rush to judgement based on what essentially amounts to polluted air. It’s so far out of hand now that I can promise you that no one is safe. Not one of you. No one out that door. No one is safe,” the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star said.
“It takes one sentence and there’s no more ground, the carpet has been pulled. It’s not just me that this has happened to; it’s happened to a lot of people. This type of thing has happened to women, men. Sadly, at a certain point they begin to think that it’s normal or that it’s them, when it’s not,” he added.

Depp became a victim of “cancel culture” after his ex-wife, fellow Hollywood star Amber Heard, accused him of being verbally and physically abusive in mid-2016.
It didn’t help when apparently overwhelmed by the consequences of “cancel culture,” Depp agreed to a $7 million divorce settlement later that year.
Not until evidence of Heard’s abusive behavior emerged in 2020 did the “cancel culture” exacted against Depp begin to reverse, leading to the #JusticeForJohnnyDepp hashtag trending (*Language warning):
Amber heard sliced off johnny depp’s finger, caused him to contract MRSA 3 times, burned his face with cigarette, shat on his bed, spat on him, withheld his medications, punched him. He lost his job & she didn’t. #JusticeForJohnnyDepp #AmberHeard pic.twitter.com/vkZzCC5aIi

Johnny Depp wasn’t canceled in my book. We all heard the rumors and saw his finger and the pictures from last year and didn’t want to jump to conclusions when all the evidence was to the contrary. But now we have audio to prove what was happening. #JusticeForJohnnyDepp pic.twitter.com/nMC9QzDozZ

I have been in recovery circles of many kinds and stories of men receiving abuse are far too common. Johnny Depp is sadly not an isolated case. No matter your gender you deserve to be safe from abuse be it emotional or physical. #JusticeForJohnnyDepp

I’ve been following #JusticeForJohnnyDepp, and impressed by the public interest it’s generated. Amber Heard deserves whatever is coming her way for what she did to her ex-husband. The witch succeeded in tricking the media and the public to demonize Depp, whereas she’s the abuser.

I feel sick to my stomach hearing this, reading every single witness statement, and knowing that an abuse survivor was not believed.
If you look into it, you’ll see he did everything a survivor of intimate violence is meant to do – but it wasn’t enough. #JusticeForJohnnyDepp https://t.co/dhr5cNz9gv

However, Depp still faces “cancel culture” rage from some subsets of American society, particularly on the political left.
“Wife Beater Johnny Depp Whines About Cancel Culture While Getting Fancy Award,” a headline at The Daily Beast reads.
The far-left outlet believes this sort of potentially libelous rhetoric is perfectly OK because last year Depp lost a lawsuit against another outlet that had also labeled him a “wife beater.”
“Johnny Depp has lost his libel case against the Sun newspaper over an article that called him a ‘wife beater.’ Mr Depp, 57, sued the paper after it claimed he assaulted his ex-wife Amber Heard, which he denies. The Sun said the article was accurate,” the BBC reported at the time.
“Judge Mr Justice Nicol said the Sun had proved what was in the article to be ‘substantially true.’ He found 12 of the 14 alleged incidents of domestic violence had occurred,” the BBC’s stunning report continued.
Yet Depp has never been arrested, charged or convicted of abuse of any kind, and the U.K. libel laws differ from U.S. laws, so The Daily Beast could potentially one day regret this piece.
Despite the lack of convictions, and despite the evidence against Heard, Depp also continues to face “cancel culture” backlash from Hollywood.
In an interview last month with The Times, the actor revealed that Hollywood has been blacklisting him over the drama with Heard.
That’s why, he said in his remarks during the San Sebastian Film Festival, he’s so appreciative of the festival and its director for “not buying what has been, for far too long, some notion of me that doesn’t exist.”
“I haven’t done anything. I just make movies,” he said.
Concluding his remarks, he stressed that it’s of paramount importance that people “stand up” to the injustices of “cancel culture.”
“It doesn’t matter if a judgment, per se, has taken some artistic license. When there’s an injustice, whether it’s against you or someone you love, or someone you believe in — stand up, don’t sit down. ‘Cause they need you,” he said.
