Bill Maher tackles black national anthem at NFL kick-off, tells left ‘you’re embarrassing me’

Much to his credit, traditionally left-wing comedian Bill Maher clearly sees where the mainstream left’s obsession with race is leading America: toward segregation.

On the latest edition this Friday of his weekly HBO talk show “Real Time,” he raised concerns about how, in the name of so-called “social justice” and “equity,” the left is dividing society into groups based on their immutable traits.

This growing illiberal tendency among the left is, in fact, one of the chief reasons why Maher has been going in so hard on his own political side as of late.

“To me, when people say to me sometimes like, ‘Boy, you know, you go after the left a lot these days. Why?’ Because you’re embarrassing me — that’s why I’m going after the left — in a way you never did before,” he explained.

“Because you’re inverting things that I — I’m not going to give up on being liberal! This is what these teachers are talking about. That you’re taking children and making them hyper-aware of race in a way they wouldn’t otherwise be!” he added.

Maher was likely referencing the throngs of teachers who’ve spoken out against the illiberalism taking over the halls of academia.

Most recently, associate professor of philosophy Peter Boghossian resigned after teaching at Portland State University for a decade because it’d turned into a “social justice factory.”

His resignation letter was published Wednesday in the Substack of Bari Weiss, the former New York Times op-ed editor and writer who was essentially driven out last year for standing up to the paper’s own illiberalism.

Maher has previously indicated that he reads Weiss’s Substack, and so based on his comments Friday, it’s likely he read Boghossian’s resignation letter.

Continuing his remarks, the left-wing comedian drew attention to the playing of the so-called “Black National Anthem” at the opening game of the NFL on Thursday.

“I saw last night on the football game, Alicia Keys sang ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing,’ which now I hear is called the ‘Black National Anthem.’ Now maybe we should get rid of our national anthem, but I think we should have one national anthem,”  he said.

Remember, despite his willingness to stand up against illiberalism, Maher is still a liberal.

“I think when you go down a road where you’re having two different national anthems, [and where] colleges … many of them have different graduation ceremonies for black and white, separate dorms — this is what I mean! Segregation! You’ve inverted the idea. We’re going back to that under a different name,”  he added.

He was correct. In its zeal to stamp out the racism that many have argued wasn’t even there in the first place, the left has inadvertently embraced racism.

When former President Barack Hussein Obama took office in 2009, race relations in the United States were at an all-time high. But over the course of eight years, relations plummeted as Obama, a left-wing ideologue, injected race into everything.

By 2016, a 54 percent majority of Americans believed that race relations between whites and blacks had deteriorated during his time in office.

However, what began with Obama didn’t end with him. Racial zealots continued to carry the torch of racial grievance and animosity after former President Donald Trump took office in 2017, and racial politics slowly but surely came to dominate every institution, every industry, every facet of American life.

Now in 2021, with President Joe Biden in office, this obsession with race has transformed into outright racial essentialism. Packaged as critical race theory, racial essentialism posits that people are defined by their race and that certain races are superior/inferior to others.

Maher clearly sees the writing on the wall. So do a growing number of liberals.

Late last month, The New York Times ran a report documenting the racial essentialist ideas being taught in New York’s private schools. The top-voted comments left on the piece all expressed anger and exasperation at the illiberalism:

One comment was particularly illustrative of the epiphany that’s slowly but surely dawning on some on the left.

“Honestly, I thought reports of CRT must be exaggerated, but the following quote, one of many disturbing ones in this article, tell me CRT is indeed beyond ridiculous: ‘a slide that named supposed characteristics of white supremacy. These included individualism, worship of the written word and objectivity,'” the comment read.

Indeed, conservatives have been warning about racial essentialism/CRT for months. And now, finally, some on the left are beginning to heed their warnings.
