After a year of downplaying oftentimes violent Black Lives Matter riots as “peaceful protests,” Axios is now hyperventilating over reports that conservatives are encouraging peaceful protests against the Biden administration’s vaccine mandate.

“Top Republicans are calling for a public uprising to protest Biden’s broad vaccine mandates, eight months after Jan. 6,” the the mainstream establishment outlet tweeted Friday morning.

“It has been decades since America has witnessed such blatant and sustained calls for mass civil disobedience against the government,” the outlet added without a trace of self-awareness.

Look:

As of Saturday morning, the tweet boasted three times as many comments — the majority of them devastatingly critical — than retweets (779).

The criticism was prompted by, one, Axios seemingly pretending as if the BLM riots of 2020 never occurred, and two, Axios suddenly acting as if “mass civil disobedience against the government” is anathema to democracy.

“In which @mikeallen asserts, contrary all evidence, that the summer of 2020, with its large-scale coordinated attacks on the White House, federal courthouses, churches, police precincts, and small businesses, simply didn’t happen,” conservative commentator Mollie Hemingway tweeted.

To bolster her point, other critics tweeted photos from the riots.

Look:

“I’m sorry, what?… were you all asleep 2017-2020? I mean, cripes, rioters laid siege to a federal courthouse for something like four weeks last year. rioters got glossy news coverage and the backing of major league Democratic officials,” conservative commentator Becket Adams tweeted.

Indeed, both congressional Democrats and their media allies openly promoted the oftentimes violent riots and claimed they were just “peaceful protests.”

The riots reportedly caused $1 to $2 billion in damages, destroyed countless businesses and left several dozen people injured. A Rasmussen Reports poll published in July found that a significantly higher number of Americans believe Congress should be investigating the riots of 2020 instead of the short-lived Jan. 6th riot.

Just like the Democrats, the media have ignored the public’s will and instead focused all their attention on the Jan. 6th riot, which they have and continue to falsely claim was an insurrection that had almost toppled American democracy.

And now that high-profile conservatives are promoting civil disobedience against President Joe Biden’s authoritarian, “tyrannical” vaccine mandate, suddenly the media are acting as if civil disobedience is also a threat to democracy.

Ironically, on the same day that Axios complained about potential Republican-led protests, the media celebrated a judge blocking Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ “anti-riot” bill that punishes “protesters” who behave violently.

It’s this sort of blatant hypocrisy and double standard — the idea that left-wing activists rioting is “peaceful protesting,” but right-wing activists peacefully protesting is a threat to democracy — is partly why Axios’ tweet triggered so much anger.

So many more responses below:

That being said, Axios’ actual report — versus just its tweet — focused primarily on Senate candidate J.D. Vance of Ohio, the author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” who released a statement Thursday calling for “mass civil disobedience.”

“Joe Biden’s proposed covid mandates are not only illegal and unconstitutional, they’re morally reprehensible. While Joe Biden likes to talk about millions of American citizens as if they’re nothing more than vermin to be ruled by him and his friends, he’s revealed himself to be nothing more than a geriatric tyrant. No American citizen should ever be forcibly segregated by the government over their vaccine status,” he said.

“The Federal Government’s attempt to bully and coerce citizens into choosing between their livelihood and their own bodily autonomy must be resisted. I have a simple message for America’s business community: DO NOT COMPLY. Do not comply with the mandates. Do not pay the government’s fines. Don’t allow yourself to be bullied and controlled. Only mass civil disobedience will save us from Joe Biden’s naked authoritarianism,” he added.

The statement was in response to the president announcing a policy forcing private companies with over 100 employees to essentially fire any employee who’s unvaccinated and refuses to be tested weekly.
