Public schools in Chicago have finally reopened, but with a major twist: Apparently, some teachers are adorning themselves with so much COVID protection gear that they look like forensic pathologists investigating a crime scene.
Case in point: In celebration of the reopening of the city’s schools, Mayor Lori Lightfoot posted photos last Monday from one local classroom, and in one of the photos the teacher could be seen decked out in what looked like a hazmat suit.
In addition to the hazmat suit, the teacher also had on gloves, a face shield and of course a face mask.

Thankfully, it appears the children weren’t forced to partake in this spectacle.

While it’s certainly good that schools in Chicago are finally open again — though schools in GOP-led locales like Florida reopened long ago — the irrationality depicted in the photo of the teacher left many scratching their heads in confusion.
The only logical possibility was that the teacher hadn’t been vaccinated yet. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed an order last month requiring teachers to be vaccinated by Sunday, Sept. 5th, according to the Chalkbeat non-profit news organization.
But even if that was the case, Chicago Public Schools has its own rule in place requiring unvaccinated teachers to take a COVID-19 test once per week, also according to Chalkbeat.
But considering that 82 percent of Chicago teachers were reportedly already vaccinated by Aug. 13th, chances are extremely high that the teacher seen above was herself vaccinated.
And so what’s she worried about? The public would certainly like to know:

Why is this,I assume,fully vaccinated person wearing full PPE to a classroom of healthy kids? I have worked in my Peds clinic with SICK kids, some with C-19, for the last 20 months with a surgical mask. Have seen approx 6k during this and had 5 positive cases in clinic. #hysteria

Is this for real? The hysteria of that “costume” is embarrassing. I feel so bad for the kids in that classroom.

One frequent theme seen in the tweets above are complaints about COVID hysteria and irrationality. One Twitter user even suggested the teacher is mentally ill.
It’s not clear whether the teacher wore the “outfit” voluntarily or because she was ordered to by the school district.
Chicago Public Schools doesn’t appear to say anything about hazmat suits and gloves on its website. There is however a section stating that “Cloth face coverings will be provided to all staff and students and required at all times.”
But that’s fairly standard.
It seems the most likely possibility may be that the teacher’s simply a nutter, as predicted by some critics. She surely wouldn’t be the only one.
Just this weekend, droves of nutters crawled out from their germ-free COVID “safe spaces” to shriek in terror over vaccinated Virginia Tech college students gathering in a tight crowd to celebrate the school’s football season opener.

It seems that for “the pandemic faithful,” the coronavirus pandemic will never end, no matter how many people are vaccinated and how much the rest of society — the sane part, at least — moves on to new and brighter days.
