Conservative talk radio host Larry Elder has become a frontrunner in the recall election of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and he just grabbed a big endorsement. From a Democrat, no less.

With the Democratic governor facing a recall in less than three weeks, some in the state are sensing an opportunity for change. An opportunity to go in a new direction amid the many challenges California faces, none more daunting than education and the homeless population.

And it’s on the issue of schooling that Gloria Romero, the former Democratic majority leader for the California state Senate, endorsed Elder, who is running as a Republican gubernatorial candidate.

“Our public schools need big change. I’m Gloria Romero; I was the majority leader of Democrats in the state senate.  I believe in charter schools and school choice. So does Larry Elder — but not Gavin Newsom. He shut our public schools while he sent his kids to private schools,” Romero says in a video released by the Elder campaign.

“Yes: I’m a Democrat. But the recall of Newsom is not about political party.  It’s about Newsom. Larry Elder for governor,” she adds.

Romero, who was a prominent supporter of Barack Obama’s candidacy for president, was the Democratic majority leader in the state senate from 2001 until 2008, before stepping down to become chairman of the Education Committee.

Newsom’s handling of the pandemic is largely the motivating factor in Californians forcing the recall. His most egregious action, or at least most notorious, was when the Democrat was photographed dining in a swanky restaurant maskless with a group of people from outside of his own household, which was a violation of his own order.

One of Elder’s most popular stances appears to be his vow to end mask and vaccine mandates in the Golden State if elected.

Elder’s early success in the race has certainly drawn the ire of the liberal media, as seen in a scathing, even racist op-ed run in The Los Angeles Times, where Elder was called “the Black Face of White Supremacy.”

“This is why a lot of people don’t go into politics because of the politics of personal destruction. This is not the first time the LA Times has attacked me, there’s another writer who all but called me a black David Duke,” Elder said in response to the piece, during an appearance on Fox News’ Hannity.

“They are scared to death. They know that if California can elect a conservative governor like myself – and they can and they will on September the 14th – then any state can. And they’re deathly afraid of this,” he added.

The Sacramento Bee cited “political experts” to say that Elder emergence may actually help Newsom, giving him a target to excite Democrat voters.

Sacramento State political science Professor Kim Nalder characterized Elder as a “Trumpian candidate.”

“If Larry Elder is the face of the alternative to Newsom, it absolutely helps him in California because California is a deep blue state,” he told the paper. “Democrats are not likely voters at this point, so the goal for Newsom is to motivate people to bother to vote. The fear of a Trumpian candidate will do that.”
