Biden jumps on FDA approval: ‘Today, I am calling on private sector to impose vaccine mandates’

President Joe Biden is continuing to push coronavirus mandates to affect “millions of Americans” and on Monday he made a direct appeal to private companies to join the effort.

“We need to move faster,” the president said as he spoke about his administration’s COVID-19 response and vaccination program.

“I have imposed vaccination requirements that will reach millions of Americans,” Biden continued.

“Today, I’m calling on more country – more companies I should say – in the private sector to step up the vaccine requirements that will reach millions more people,” he announced with a momentary flub.

He urged leaders who have been awaiting FDA approval of the COVID-19 vaccinations to move ahead, saying, “I call on you now to do that, require it.”

“Do what I did last month – require your employees to get vaccinated or face strict requirements,” he added, asserting that requirements for vaccines have “been around for decades.”

“With today’s FDA full approval, there’s another good reason to get vaccinated. So, please get vaccinated now,” the president said, referring to Monday’s move by the Food and Drug Administration granting full approval to Pfizer and BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine.

“If you’re one of the millions of Americans who said that they will not get the shot until it has full and final approval of the FDA, it has now happened. The moment you’ve been waiting for is here,” Biden had said.

With many local requirements popping up around the nation for vaccines passports and proof of vaccinations to participate in activities like indoor dining and concerts, such as is the case in New York City, there has been a pushback from the White House on complaints about a federally mandated vaccine passport plan.

CNN quickly sought to back Biden in a report earlier this month “fact-checking” claims that the administration is pushing for vaccine passports.

The president’s remarks on Monday, urging private sector companies to get on board and “require” vaccinations is likely to stir the debate once more.
