Rachel Maddow breaks down describing Afghan interpreter’s escape, conveniently leaves out crucial element

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow understandably burst into tears during the tail end of a lengthy segment Wednesday evening about the plight of one of the many Afghan allies who’re stuck in Afghanistan, some seemingly with no way out.

The segment earned her praise even from some conservatives, who too recognize that what’s happening in Afghanistan right now is an unfathomable horror show.

However, her tears also generated backlash because of what Maddow had failed to do even once during the segment: Hold the man responsible for the crisis in Afghanistan, U.S. President Joe Biden, accountable.

The tears came at the end of the segment when she revealed that the specific interpreter she’d been talking about, an Afghan named Zak, had finally made it onto a plane headed out of Afghanistan thanks to the efforts of Major Thomas Schueman.

“Major Schueman shared this picture of Zak and his family on their way to the airport. … As of this morning, he said he didn’t know when they would make it on a plane or what their final destination would be, but he knew they were safe because they were with the Marines,” she said.

“And then look. One last picture today. Posted nine hours ago. The caption on this one was two words: wheels up. I’m not crying; you’re crying. It’s dusty in here; somebody is — somebody is chopping onions,” she tearfully added.

Zak’s story is indeed tear-worthy, especially since it boasts a happy ending. But for most Afghan allies, there will likely be a sad ending thanks to the incompetence of the president whom Maddow undoubtedly voted for in the 2020 election.

The day after her tearful segment, The Wall Street Journal dropped a bombshell report revealing that the Biden administration’s top brass had been warned in mid-July about everything that was about to happen.

“An internal State Department memo last month warned top agency officials of the potential collapse of Kabul soon after the U.S.’s Aug. 31 troop withdrawal deadline in Afghanistan, according to a U.S. official and a person familiar with the document,” The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

“The cable, sent via the State Department’s confidential dissent channel, warned of rapid territorial gains by the Taliban and the subsequent collapse of Afghan security forces, and offered recommendations on ways to mitigate the crisis and speed up an evacuation,” the Journal added.

The Atlantic likewise revealed that refugee advocates had been pleading with the administration “for months” to begin evacuations. Yet evacuations didn’t begin until the last week of July.

Aid agencies and congressional lawmakers were reportedly left “dumbfounded that the administration did not act with more urgency.”

Is there any good news? Well, yes. As noted by Maddow’s critics below, there are no more mean tweets from former President Donald Trump.

Yay …

The bad news, of course, is that the world is falling apart.

None of this is to say that conservatives disagree with the sentiment of anguish and horror that Maddow expressed Wednesday. They certainly do.

It’s just that they wish she’d heeded their warnings and voted for the mean-tweet-posting guy who knew what he was doing over the “nice” but “sleepy” and “senile” senior citizen who’s created a catastrophe in Afghanistan …
