‘God bless America’: Reaction pours in as Cuomo resigns over groping allegations, skates on nursing home deaths

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo shockingly announced on Tuesday that he would resign in 14 days following an explosive investigation that found he had sexually harassed 11 women.

“And I think that given the circumstances the best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to government, and therefore that is what I’ll do, because I work for you, and doing the right thing, is doing the right thing for you,” Cuomo somberly stated during a news briefing.

“I’m a New Yorker, born and bred. I’m a fighter and my instinct is to fight through this controversy because I truly believe it is politically motivated, I believe it is unfair and it is untruthful and I believe it demonizes behavior that is unsustainable for society,” he stated.

Cuomo added: “It is a matter of life and death. Government operations and wasting energy on distraction is the last thing government should be,” he said. “I cannot be the cause. New York tough means New York loving. And I love New York and I love you. Everything I have ever done has been motivated by that love and I would never want to be unhelpful in any way.”

Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul will step in to take Cuomo’s place once his resignation is effective. She will be the state’s first female governor. Cuomo insisted that “the transition must be seamless.”

Although Cuomo is resigning, he’s still defending his egregious behavior. He stated he could not deny the “way the political wind is blowing.”

Cuomo noted that the investigation and the impeachment “will consume government, it will cost taxpayers millions of dollars, it will brutalize people.”

Attorney General Letitia James’ report found Cuomo “sexually harassed multiple women and violated state law.” He has repeatedly denied the allegations, but admitted he has “been too familiar with people” and apologized to the women he “truly offended.”

The report described an “unsafe” and “hostile” work environment in Cuomo’s office.

Just before the governor announced his resignation, his attorney, Rita Glavin, stated, “This is about the veracity and credibility of a report that is being used to impeach and take down an elected official.”

Brittany Commisso, who is one of the women who is referenced in the investigation, told “CBS This Morning” and the Albany Times Union that she believes that Cuomo knows he broke the law and that he needs to be “held accountable.”

“There’s a difference between being an affectionate and warm person. Sexual harassment is completely different,” she declared. “The governor knows that what he did to me and what he did to these 10 other women, whether it be a comment or an actual physical contact, was sexual harassment. He broke the laws that he himself created.”

Cuomo’s announcement follows the resignation of one of his top advisers, Melissa DeRosa, who stepped down Sunday evening.

Cuomo addressed his three daughters over the charges, “I want them to know from the bottom of my heart that I never did and I never would intentionally disrespect a woman, treat any woman differently than I would want them treated and that is the God’s honest truth.”

“Your dad made mistakes. And he apologized, and he learned from it and that’s what life is all about,” the governor told them.

While Cuomo is resigning for harassing women, he has still not answered for the thousands of deaths of the elderly in nursing homes attributed to his handling of the pandemic.

Response to Cuomo’s resignation was swift and some want to know what his brother CNN host Chris Cuomo will do as well:
