Mark Steyn invokes Corn Pop in hilarious take on Biden’s claim he used to drive an 18-wheeler

The White House runs a tight ship when it comes to keeping President Joe Biden on script, but one of Biden’s infamous gaffes occurred this week at a Pennsylvania Mack Truck facility where Biden claimed he “used to drive an 18-wheeler, man,” which led to Fox News contributor Mark Steyn joining “Tucker Carlson Tonight” to analyze Biden’s penchant for embellishment.

Reporters followed up on the claim, asking the White House for context to Joe Biden’s assertion that he used to drive 18-wheelers, seeing as it’s been noticeably absent from his resumé for decades.

The White House in turn cited an article in a Delaware newspaper from 1973 as evidence he once rode in an 18-wheeler.

Steyn appeared on Carlson’s show Thursday night to poke fun at Biden’s obscure tales, weaving a fantastical thread to connect some of the president’s most unbelievable stories including his taxing work as a laborer in a coal mine, his arrest on Robben Island while attempting to visit Nelson Mandela in prison, and his written-for-the-silver-screen encounter with the ruthless gang leader Corn Pop during his lifeguarding days in the 1960s.

“None of us has the skillset that Joe Biden has. And I utterly deplore your skepticism about this,” Steyn began jokingly.

“He, in fact, when he went to rescue Nelson Riddle – spring him from prison – he was driving an 18-wheeler to Robben Island. He didn’t realize he couldn’t get by road to Robben Island. He thought it was by like, Rhode Island where you can go by road,” Steyn illustrated.

“So he was driving an 18-wheeler. It used to be a 23-wheeler, but Corn Pop stole five of the wheels. It’s true that he wasn’t actually a miner, but he has sniffed the hair of a minor. I mean, we’re getting a little hung up on details here,” Steyn jested to a cackling Carlson.

“When he said he was a fighter pilot–he said he was a fighter pilot in the Spanish-American War and you guys go bananas. But in fact, he did once take a business class flight to Barcelona in 1978. So we’re getting a little too, I think, hung up on details here,” he added.

While Steyn was obviously joking, his parodied defense of Biden hit uncomfortably close to home, reminiscent of the liberal media’s coddling of Biden.

“He has a rich life, you know? So he’s driven a 23-wheeler. If he’s allowed to stay up late, stays up late, he likes to watch ‘Wheel of Fortune.’ That’s a wheeler. He’s not always allowed to. Sometimes he has to turn in after ‘Murder, She Wrote.’ Sometimes he likes to watch the wainscoting channel and count the beadboard from left to right. He has a very rich life,” Steyn concluded leaving Carlson and his cameraman in a fit of laughter.

The Fox News contributor described the emphatic storyteller version of Biden as the “real Biden” and said that “this husk that they prop up in front of the camera is the one we should get rid of.”

Whether the comments are a result of shameless pandering or something much darker, Biden has certainly lived a colorful life in his own mind.
