Democrats have long championed the welfare state, so is it any surprise that they are requesting handouts for the Texas delegation that fled to D.C. to stall GOP-sponsored voting-reform legislation?
In what looks like a parody but apparently is real, the official Twitter account of the Dallas County Democratic Party is requesting personal care products and snack items for the 50-or-so state legislators who — to much media fanfare and hoopla — abandoned their work stations.
“Our Dems in DC said they’d appreciate care packages from home. Before 5pm Tues, we’re collecting Dr. Pepper, salsa, hard candy, hairspray, travel toiletries, hand sanitizers, sewing kits, first aid, and/ or $ to pay shipping. TY!,” the Dallas Democrats wrote on Twitter.
The Texas politicians seem to be operating, however, like they are engaged in some kind of hero’s journey to uncharted territory (or like pre-teens at sleepaway camp, as one Twitter user quipped) rather than just attending meetings, going on TV, and hanging out at upscale hotels (that usually supply toiletries) in the nation’s capital.
Wastefully shipping these care-package items, rather than buying or ordering them locally, also makes little sense.
Texas state reps reportedly only earn about $7,200 a year (plus a daily stipend when the legislature is in session), which is unusually low as compared to many other jurisdictions. Most, if not all of them, likely have a high-paying primary job, however, which also perhaps underscores the concept of a citizen legislature. And, in general, status as an elected official doesn’t hurt when it comes to getting other gigs.
Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan has demanded that the Democrats who fled the state forgo their daily pay.
In the meantime, the voting integrity bill has passed the Texas senate, but an absence of a quorum caused by the fleeing Democrats has stalled it in the lower chamber.
Washington, D.C. is a city with many low-income residents who could use some help, however. With that generally in mind, Twitter users are roasting the Democrats’ care-package request and metaphorically saying return to sender. Here is a sampling:
you’ve got to be kidding. there are actual people in need of food and shelter to survive & the private plane & beer crew who won’t come home to do their jobs wants care packages? these people are SICK. send your money to people who don’t know if they have money for dinner tonight https://t.co/gmY5mLVHSa

These utter morons have been gone for literally only days and want a care package mailed from Texas for a photo op with stuff they could buy at a local CVS.
Salsa and first aid? 😂😂😂😂😂

???
the Texas Democrats are in hotels in Washington D.C., not deployed to a FOB in Afghanistan. https://t.co/5phKX6mj2p

Important to note that these lawmakers are still getting $221/day in per diem from taxpayers, had private flights and luxury hotel rooms paid for, and are just sitting in hotel conference rooms doing zoom meetings.
If you’re feeling charitable please find a better cause. https://t.co/SspiqFLasr

There are 2 Safeways within 5 minutes of their hotel and a Whole Foods that’s 2 minutes away. They’re fine. https://t.co/zrIZnUG5fY pic.twitter.com/5DBZIffLJU

They’re in D.C., not Venezuela. https://t.co/3FpczXwqhx

Awww, so cute! It’s like they’re all 12-year-old girls at sleep away camp!

Here’s a link to @FeedingAmerica where you can support a worthwhile charity helping Americans in need instead of throwing money at these private jet flying covid infecting moronshttps://t.co/2r3eKSOqSd
— Comfortably Smug (@ComfortablySmug) July 25, 2021
They couldn’t just steal some toiletries from the private jet?

Um, adults in hotels with a per diem don’t need care packages. And it’s illegal to mail hairspray. 🤦♀️ But our troops overseas would love a care package with toiletries and treats from the USA! Here’s what to send:https://t.co/wzp5IU7wOh

What the actual . . . . . .??? The fled to sabotage their states legal process, disobeyed federal mask laws and spread the virus, spending tax dollars along the way now they need wtf from their constituents? You all make M Hirono look competent.

Is this a joke? I thought they got a $200 per day per diem? They fly to DC on taxpayer $$$ & they want people to send them care packages? For what? They don’t have any money? There’s no stores in DC? It’s not like they’re halfway around the World serving in a 3rd world country

In fairness I understand their hesitation. They could easily be shot, robbed, raped, carjacked and/or murdered by one of the DNC’s core constituency groups of they leave their hotel rooms.

It’s DC dude not the middle of an Amazon rain forest. They can get all that stuff at the corner store and no need to pay for shipping.
— GeoBent I identify as a rock (@Geobent) July 25, 2021
I’m sure there is a grocery store by their five star hotel.
I know DC is a sespool, but you make it sound like they’re in a third world country, or at war..
As a matter of fact how about you collect those care packages and send them to soldiers over seas.

What are they refugees? Or are they 1% elites in the most privileged city in the world? Hint: it’s the latter. This is flat out embarrassing in the cringiest possible way. I can’t believe this is actually happening. Why not give that care package to a homeless veteran instead?

“The Texas Democrats plan to stay in Washington, D.C…until at least August 7, when they are no longer in danger of being pulled into a special legislative session. The trip has, so far, reportedly cost a shocking $1.5 million, though the legislators insist that that money is coming out of campaign funds and from supporters who are anxious to see their effort succeed,” The Daily Wire reported.
